Planning Tips, What to Bring, Splitting Costs

Subject: What to Bring / What not to Bring
We are planning on basically just bringing clothes and getting anything and everything else we need once we arrive. We are staying in Corolla. Someone earlier mentioned stopping before the bridge to buy their perishables. We were planning to buy all of our groceries once we got to Corolla. Is this a good idea or a bad one? Aside from groceries, we had also planned on just buying beachy things for our boys there. All you veterans...help...do we need to bring anything besides our clothes? Our house is very well-equipped. Thanks! Shari Read Replies...

Subject: Advice on splitting costs?
We (4 couples including a 4 and 5 year old) are heading to the OBX (Avon) this year for the first time. We leave July 22nd and are terribly excited! Does anyone have any advice concerning sharing costs while we are there? Someone mentioned having each couple assigned one dinner during the week and they would be responsible for buying and preparing the food. The other 3 nights I was thinking we'd go out or steam some crabs and all pay our share. I am hung up on how to split the costs for the rest of the food, paper products, etc. Some of us like "special" food that no one else wants and therefore, should not pitch in on. Some of us DRINK A LOT OF BEER and some drink none and so on and so on. I am not a cheapskate, I have no problem splitting everything evenly between all parties but I don't think everyone else feels that way. Does anyone have any advice? Read Replies...

Subject: Driving down with frozen food? Does it last?
We'd like to pre-cook meals for ease of use on arrival. How long has anyone traveled with pre-cooked FROZEN meals in a cooler and still had them last? Assuming a cooler is packed with ice that is. Wondering if they would last through the night if we kept packing them with new ice? Thoughts? Read Replies...

Subject:Who gets Master Bedroom?
How do you decide who gets the "good" bedroom? Any fun contest ideas? Any good "consolation prize" if you don't get it? Like maybe whoever "wins" the good bedroom hast to buy dinner or something? Just looking for ideas from other "groups" that have traveled together. Read Replies...

Subject: First day
OKay, you've planned and saved and finally you arrived at the Beach. So when you wake up on your very first day, what do you do? Go fishing, walking, surfing...We typically, take a early morning walk, go back to the house for breakfast, take a bike ride, go fishing, get a nap, go down to the docks in Hatteras to see what the fishermen brought in that day, out to dinner (or cook in), another bike ride, fishing, bed. How about you? Read Replies...

Subject: Soundside vs Oceanside
Hi all! Our family is looking into houses in the OB for next summer. Mainly Northern areas, such as Corolla, Duck, Nags Head and perhaps Southern Shores. We have children ages 2 1/2-5 and would like opinions on the beaches in those areas. If you stay soundside, are there 'beach' areas just like what you would get on the oceanside, but calmer waters? And if you stay 'between the highways' does it generally mean you have to get in the car to go to the beach or is walking still an option? Any information and tips would be much appreciated! Subject: Should I get my pool heated?
I was renting a house in July that has a pool. It costs about $300 extra to heat the pool. Does anyone know if it's warm enough to swim in the pool without getting it heated? Read More...

Subject: What should we pack?
Hi - Coming to the OBX for the first time this summer and renting a house on the beach. We are coming with our 2 year old toddler. We know we need to bring baby items, but what else do we need to bring? So far, we figured out that we will need our own sheets, and towels. What else is typically not included (eg. pillows, laundry supplies, dishware etc.) in a house rental that we will need?

P.S. Any parents with toddlers who have been to the OBX, please feel free suggest things that I should consider bringing for baby (besides essentials like crib, high chair, potty, etc.) Read More...

Subject: Trip Insurance
What is the prevailing average rate for trip cancellation insurance? It seems that many of the rental companies do not want to post the prices on their websites. Thanks. Read More...
