Subject: 4x4 vacation rentals, beaches
thinking about renting a cottage on the beach in a 4x4 area. never been to the obx so how safe is it for kids to play on the beach with the vehicles allowed? is there a separate area for the vehicles to go on? not sure how "kid-friendly those areas would be. thanks! Read More...

Curious to know if Carova, as beautiful as it looks, is too far from any other attractions in the outer banks? Read More...

Subject: Things to do on 4x4 beaches
We are thinking of renting two large homes on the 4x4 beach next May, for a group ranging in ages from 27-60, with 3 kids ages 3-8. Anyone have thoughts on if this is a spot a lot of people would like, or if it only appeals to those who prefer solitude? We just vacationed in So. California and people went surfing, on bike rides, and could run out to the stores quickly if need be, so I have a feeling this will be much different. Does the area have things to do for people who want to be active outside? Is it difficult to get to a nearby area to do shopping, get some town life? Having never been there, your expertise is much appreciated! Read More...

Subject: Carova vs Corolla vs?
We are traveling to the OBX in a month, renting a couple houses for a family reunion. Some of us want to stay in Carova, rent a 4x4, and some are bringing their boat w/truck and trailer so need to be in town. Any suggestions? There will be 15 or so of us, three families (all siblings), 8 young men between the ages of 17 and 25. Want to get something rented today! Thanks for your suggestions. Read Replies...

Subject: 4x4 area
We are staying 9 miles up in the 4x4 section, and had a question about my vehicle. I have both a Chevy Trailblazer (2003) & a Ford Explorer (2002) and needed some advice. Both are 4wd, but the Trailblazer is slightly lower to the ground than the Explorer and the tires are more for highway use. I've read a lot of the message boards (excellent info), but didn't find much on just how rugged a 4x4 needs to be to get up to this area. Thanks for any help! Read More...

Subject: 4x4 beach traffic
A group of us are planning our first visit to OBX this year and are staying at one of the 4x4 beaches about 3 mi. north of the paved road. Recently, someone told me that they wouldn't advise staying here because of all the people 4-wheeling driving up and down the beach at all hours of the day/night. With kids, they also told me that you have to watch for 4x4s while the kids are playing on the beach. While I doubt it's as bad as they said, what's it really like there? Thank you! Read More...

Subject: Cars on the 4x4 beach area...
First time to 4x4 area in september. Im a little confused...... If you are to drive right on the beach, wouldnt the vehicles be in the way of the peoples activites ( i.e. sunbathing, playing, etc.)? How close are the cars and how often do they pass by? Read More...

Subject: 4X4 rentals
I will be driving a rental car from PA to the Frisco/Hatteras area.I would like to rent a 4x4 somewhere close to these locations, since I can only drive one vehicle at a time and leaving the first rental for a period of time at some unknown location would make me uncomfortable. Is there any rental agency close to either of these two towns? Read More...

Subject: 4x4 Beach driving & sitting
Just where is one to sit in the 4x4 area? I'm confused! We, like most people, like to sit at waters edge, but 'they' say you are to drive at waters edge. I also see people driving back farther, closer to the dunes-in other truck tracks. So where is the 'right' place to sit? I worry sometimes we will blend in with the beach because of the sun glare and get run over! Dont get me wrong, i wont vacation anywhere else but the 4x4 area-so dont suggest i go to another area! LOL---just tell me where to sit :) Read More...

Subject: 4 wheel driving
I have read the sites about four wheel driving south of Nags Head. However, I cant get a good idea of how long a distance is four wheel accessible traveling south. I am trying to decide whether or not to come in my four wheel drive truck or just come in the car when we visit OBX next month... Read More...

Subject: Carova
We vacation in the 4x4 area on Swan Beach. We are thinking of going farther north this year, somewhere around the 8-9 mile mark. Everyone says it is very tranquil and private the farther up you go. BUT as i am looking at aeriel views and just general searching it looks like there are a lot MORE houses up there than at the 3-6 mile area. Any input on this?? Thank you in advance for help! Subject: The Perfect Spot
This year will be my first trip to OBX and I'm looking for something in particular, but without knowing the different areas, it's hard to decide where to rent. What we are looking for is a rental house on the beach. We want to stay in an area that is not overly crowded, but not completely empty either. We want the seclusion, but we also would like to be within a few minutes of restaurants, shopping, groceries, fishing, etc. The Corolla area seems like what we are looking for, but I don't know for sure. I also found some places in Carova, but I don't really know where that is. I would love to get some advice from you! Thanks!! Read More...
