Subject: Restaurant advice
Hello, I have already read some posts on here referring to food, I haven't been for about five years. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good affordable dining (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). I once ate at Port O Call restaurant, and it was expensive and not really too great. I am coming with my boyfriend, my friend, and her three year old son. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have not been here for 5 years you will see many changes. The Port-o-call is a very average priced resturant around here. There are many more expensive, but few below. I avoid the buffet resturants so I can't comment on them, but you are going to find that eating out on the Banks is not cheap. One of the best deals on the beach (in my opinion) is the Black Pelican. Not cheap, but good and an Outer Banks type of atmosphere. Part of it was the lifeguard station and telegraph office in Kitty Hawk when the Wright Bros first flew here. Good food too.

There is a great place on Manteo Island, Big Al's, good for lunch, great burgers and milk shakes. I've never eaten there for breakfast or dinner. It has a fun 50'2 atmosphere and the three year old might like it.

WE always enjoy the New York Pizza Pub. They have great lasagna and the prices are decent. The prortion sizes are really big.

Another great place to eat is the Black Pelican on the beach road. Not only are you getting a good meal, but you are also getting a taste of history of the lifesaving station used by the Wright Brothers to spread the word of their flight.

I love Goombay's and Black Pelican. I have heard that Mama Kwans is very good and plan to go there soon. There are lots of great places to eat but none too cheap.

Try Mrs. T.'s Deli on the bypass in Nags Head. The Outer Banks Curly Fries are really good!

The Lone Cedar on the causeway in Nags Head is one of the best! It is a must when ever we go down to visit family. We use to eat at the Lone Cedar often until we moved out of state. :(

All of the above are great resturants set up for visitors. If you would love a true "locals" resturant try:

Basnights- Maneto Causeway
(a little pricy but great food)

Sam and Omies MP 17 Beach Road
(started in 1940s or so by a local fisherman and his son)

Fatboyz MP 16 great ice cream and burgers - run by a wonderful local family with 5 children

Saltwater Grill MP 6 Beach road best seafood and prices anywhere on the beach
(try fridays lobster and salad special cheap cheap cheap)

Upper Crust Pizza- KDH best pizza to be found here on our island.

Thai Room- fantastic thai food- thum and jimmy are the best.

Of course everyone has thier own opinions but these are my familys favorites for sure.. and we eat at these places year round never disappointed :)

For years we have visited the Lone
Cedar at least twice a year. It has always been a great experience until yesterday when the waitress was rude, unavailable, not knowledgable of the menu and abrupt.
The food was good, waitress bad!

Each summer they have a Best on the Beach contest, but it seems like everyone wins in some catagory. Here are some of my favorites:

Best Hot Dog - Capt'n Franks
Best High $ Resturant - Owens
Best Lower $ Rest - Black Pelican
Best BBQ - Sooey's or High Cotton
Best seafood raw bar - Dirty Dicks
Best Steak - JK's
Best Breakfast - Jolly Roger
Best Mexican - La Fogata
Best Chinese - there are none
Best Brunch - Chili Peppers
Best all you can eat - who cares
Best Fast Food - Wendy's
Best Pizza - still looking

I have no connection in any of the above except I spend money in them.

One restaurant in Manteo is simply one of the best...in the OBX..they are opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stripers! Kid menu..try it..the food and service is excellent...prices are reasonable and the view is awesome!
Try it...I think you will enjoy the experience..

I grew up on the Outer Banks, but sadly no longer live there. Husband is military so we move a bit, and where we live now, the food does not even compare. Most places on the OBX are not going to be much less than the Port O' Call, but there is truly a wealth of great food there. Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe (very good lunch and dinner...a little pricey in the evening though), Goombay's, Tortuga's, La Fogata (very reasonably priced Mexican) The Dune's has an excellent breakfast buffet and good lunch choices also, Henry's, Mamma Kwan's, New York Pizza (Great Pepperonni Pizza), Fat Boyz (excellent grilled chicken, and ice cream), The Rundown Cafe (St. Martin Shrimp, YUM), and if you truly want to try something special, 1587 in Manteo or Collington Cafe (Very romantic, excellent food, but a little pricey...my favorite is 1587). I am not a big buffet person, but Jimmy's Seafood Buffet would be the one I would go to, expensive but lots of selection. Also, another of my favorites is Slammin Sammy's (Chicken and Black Bean Nachos, or anything Steamed..Shrimp, Crab Legs)

Sorry for the bad news but last night Basnights Lone Cedar Cafe burned to the ground. The cause is undetermined at this time. It was one of the BEST places to eat on the OBX and I've lived here all my life.

Our prayers should go out to the Basnight family, Marc, Sandy, Vicki, and Caroline, and their staff and families.

I just received a call from my sister in Va. (I live in Ct.) to tell me the sad news regarding the Lone Cedar Cafe. Our family gathers there at least 2-3x's during our July vacation...we are saddeded for the loss to the Basknights and the entire OBX community.

What ever you do don't go to Awful Arthurs they serve frozen shrimp in the Outer Banks this should be outlawed!! Kill Devil Grill is one of the best restaurants on the OBX. When you see Senator Basnights dining there you know its good. And it go's without saying that Basnights is the best on the banks

LT, just got back from outer banks sept. 30, basnights lone cedar is open again, just ate there an the food was the best I had all week there, Pelican Isle was ok also but not close enough to basnights, Im very fussy about good food esp. seafood, used to MD. style crab cakes and trust me if I say I would eat there again an again take my word for it, because if its bad I never got back, Fishbones rest. on the sound side is a joke, very small servings and taste is nothing, never will they see me again

Hello. I'm new here. I live in KY, but from WV. I have been visiting Kitty Hawk since I was 3 and I'm 24. I HATE seafood, however, I was just married this past June and my husband Loves it! We will be coming to Kitty Hawk on vacation this June 29th-July 6th and I was wondering if you guys could give me some names (and locations) of some really good (and maybe affordable and nice) seafood places anywhere from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head. Thank you so much. Jessica in KY! :)

NY Pizza Pub in Nags Head, NC mile marker 10. I could not believe the Pizza and pasta dishes and the entrees were so tasty. Great atmosphere and the service is great. Portions great size too and the prices are very reasonable. Better than the restaurants in New York. Best restaurant on the strip.

The best way to know the best "local" resturants anywhere on the OBX is just ask them if they are open year round. And another good peice from just me.. if it has the words "dirty" or "awful" or "buffet" associated with it, its probably a good idea to stay away. Everything in all u can eat style resturants is frozen and imported. There is nothing local about any of them. enjoy your vacation and remember.. beachroad 35 miles an hour, bypass 50. Pick the speed thats right for you.

When you go to the outerbanks you can get VERY FRESH seafood. The seafood will come straight from the ocean to your plate. You will not get that from Red Lobster.I would suggest eating at "OWENS" They have been around for more than 75 years. They knoe how cook seafood. They also have great beef dishes. Enjoy the BANKS!!!!!

We locals like real seafood. We don't do frozen or imported. Red Lobster would never make it through the winter; the locals eat where the food is fresh and caught here in our sound and ocean. You will be very pleased with Sugar Creek and Lone Cedar both in Nags Head on the causeway. Now these are fresh and delivered from our docks to their kitchen daily. The food is good the service is good and the price is good. Good all around and you will never look at Red Lobster the same way again.

We visit OBX every summer for a week and absolutely love it. Two families with kids, so picking a restaurant that appeals to all is an undertaking. Here are our favorites, both kid and adult approved:
Dirty Dicks (okay, the food is not the greatest, but the kids absolutely LOVE it, and food is passable for adults)
Fuji - Japanese hibachi
Kids and Adults all time favorite. We have to go here at least once every time we visit. Most excellent sushi, sashimi and added bonus, hibachi cooked in front of you. Big entertainment plus for kids
Black Pelican - we just discovered this one last year as it was right down the street from our rental. EXCELLENT food, great choices and kid friendly enough to keep them happy while we finished our third bottle of wine :)

I lived in KDH for a few years and still own a place in Duck and go back to the banks as much as possible. I like to refer to OBX as the place God lived when He was creating the rest of the universe. The best places to eat: The Lone Cedar, The Flying Fish, The Blue Point, Owen's, The Roadside, Chili Peppers,Collington Cafe. That is just a few of the great places.
