we'll be in avon this coming weekend for the week 3rd-10th

here's where will will definatley be going

Dolphin Den - Avon
Fish House - Buxton (best lunch on the island IMO)
Howards Pub - Ocrakoke
Tides - Buxton by the lighthouse
Quarterdeck - Frisco (they are slow but food is fresh and fantastic)

YOU ALSO MUST GET PIZZA FROM LISA'S UP IN RODANTHE!

here's where we MAY be going

Froggy dog - had a couple of GREAT meals there last year in early september, but have heard pople complain about service this year so I'm not sure

Buoys - Great Lunch there a few years back. may stop in

Mad Crabber - Avon. It's under new management and a new building so I'm not sure but it was really good when it was open under old management 2 years ago.

Soundside buxton/frisco. seems like they are under new management every year. sometimes it's great sometimes just OK. we have a soft spot for it though as we at there and had our picture taken on the deck on our first vacation together.

Dirty Dicks - avon It's good, but it's also expensive. we may skip it this year.

My wife and I were married in waves in 2002 and had 2 meals that week at the down under cafe. It was very tasty. haven't been there since...don't know if it's still there or under new management or what. may be worth a look

the Fish House for lunch - FANTASTIC.

I like the mad crabber, but it's under new management, so I'm not sure.

the Froggy Dog was under new management last year and that was a GOOD thing. both meals there were great and they had a playroom for our little one.

Buoys was very good the time we ate there a couple of years ago.

we like Tides by the Lighthouse too.

Dirty Dicks is pretty decent, but a little pricey

Breakwaters has always been great but man it is expensive.

hope this helps. this is all off the top of my head.

we'll be in avon the week of labor day. I can't wait!

catch a ferry and eat at Howards Pub over on ocracoke.

Dolphin Den~ WONDERFUL!

I know a lot of people love Dirty Dicks but we did not care to much for it and for the price we were disappointed.

We stayed on HI two weeks ago. The Breakers in Hatteras Village at Oden's Dock was excellent. The Sandbar Grill between frisco and buxton was very good as well. We also ate at the Pilots HOuse and it was very disappointing for the price. Have a nice trip.

There is a little place in the Food Lion shopping center in Avon, that is kinda under the radar, that some of the locals tipped us to, called the Pickled Steamer. I would definitely recommend it for lunch. Not expensive, and portions there were huge. We would always have to bring half home. It was 2 meals for the price of one.

2761: great suggestion.

They have 10 cent shrimp during happy hour too at the pickled steamer. my dad and I spent $8.00 and shared 50 steamed shrimp and two waters for a nice afternoon snack. (the water was bottled - so that was a little bit of a rip off - but you can't beat 10 cent shrimp)

Sorry, but I can't recommend the Froggy Dog. Bad experience there in terms of waiting for a table. They didn't even care about our concerns. Even sent follow-up e-mail and absolutely no response. We'll never go there again.

We love Buoys. You just can't beat their crab cakes (and I've eaten them everywhere!) and my husband says they have the best grilled wahoo EVER! We'll be visiting again the week of October 1st and look forward to Buoys.

Bubbas BBQ is awful. The Gingerbread house has good pizza. Was not impressed with Howards Pub. Food overpriced, so so taste and slow service. We cook at our rental most of the time.

Agree with most of the places listed, but would NOT Suggest "The Fish House" in Buxton. The meal we got tasted like Mrs. Pauls frozen fish, service was very slow, and the table rocked every time any one of our party moved. We will NOT return to "The Fish House". Try "The Pilot House" instead. A bit pricey, but great food AND great service. Ask for a window table.

Definitly one of the best... unique, fun, great atmosphere with wonderful staff...and the food is beyond comparison. Many one of a kind selections. And the whole place is non-smoking!

Well, then, my pretty -- you must eat at Buxton Munch! We cannot say enough good stuff about it! And it's so cute inside! The prices will make you happy and the taste will blow your mind!

Quarterdeck, Sandbar and Grille (nice view, too), Dolphin Den. The Tides is gone now, replaced by the Captain's Table--OK, but be prepared for a long wait for a table. Pilot House is gone, too.

My family visits several times a year, and we have several favorites:

Diamond Shoals in Buxton- Agnes is soooo sweet!

Howard's Pub- so worth the ferry ride, busy, but awesome!!!

Hodad's- yummy, and the waiter was very easy on the eyes!

Fish House- (used to be Billy's) we still love it!

My wife and I have been to the OBX over a dozen times - and have stayed in Corolla, Nags Head, Hatteras Village and several times in Avon.
If you like pizza and or pasta DO NOT miss Topper's in the Food Lion shopping center in Avon. We eat there (or take out) at least a couple times every time we go down!

Hodad's has really changed. The food is greasy and cheap tasting. You can tell there is new management at that place. The cute waiter is gone, too.
Pity and a shame.

I would not recommend Dirty Dicks the food S**ked and the prices were high. After eating at Crabby Bills in St. Petersburg Florida mt seafood expectations are high as they should be at an establishment sellinf fresh seafood! The only cool thing at Dirty Dicks is there store and shirts! If your fishing stop at Frank and Frans I made my first trip to the OBX last year and he spoke in length about fishing over the phone before getting there and spent all the time we needed and sold me only what I needed to catch fish there. I really didn't find any food in Southern OBX that I say was great but up in Kitty Hawk there was a place on the left Barefoot Bernies real good food and great service! We stayed in Waves and drove there a couple times to eat! Have fun

We were really disappointed in Buoy's restaurant. The service was cold and impersonal and the food was mediocre at best. We really liked Mack Daddy's though. The service was outstanding and the food was really good. We really felt like they appreciated our business. We will definitely go back to Mack Daddy's but probably not to Buoy's.

We have a trailer in Buxton and spend most weekends there and most of the summer. Sand Bar and Grill is by far the best food on the island, and the view is awesome!!!Try the Orange Blossom for breakfast. The apple ugly is delicious!!

We just had dinner at Mack Daddy's. The salad and appetizers were great but the entree (we both had a seafood combo) was awful. Some was cold, some room temperature, the flounder had so much Old Bay on it that it was barely edible. And dry! Never again. We like Breakwater in Hatteras and the Mad Crabber in Avon because we love Bea, the waitress there. If you want to go where the locals go, try Pop's Raw Bar in Buxton. It's smokey but the food is great. Oysters on the half shell and steamed shrimp is our traditional first meal when on the Islad.

Don't go to Down Under Restaurant in Waves!
8 of us went there last night and the food was appauling. Burger very dry and old. Steak medium rare? how about cold and a little frosty.
Fish special and pasta? a jar of goo poured over bad fish.
Too make it worse, the waitress started arguing, we ordered a dish and asked to make sure there was no bread crumbs on it due to allergies, she assured us, it came out with bread crumbs, it was sent back, it now came back bare with no seasoning, then we got a snotty comment, "atleast you ate your veggies!"
Then to top it off, we all add seperate tabs yet they added the gratuitis on each bill, DISGUSTED! worse place i have eaten in the world!

POPS.......you people are obviously not from Hatteras. No one even mentioned Pops!!! Right there between Buxton and Frisco. Looks like a dive, right? Best damn seafood platter for two on the island. I have tried every restaurant on the island. Get the Seafood platter for two and you will see. I guarantee you will be amazed how good it it. A little smoky sometimes, but it's all part of what makes Hatteras great!

We have been visiting the Hatteras area for over 20 years and our favorite has always been "the Fish House" (formerly Billys). Don't go unless you want the local seafood though. We were there tonight (6/2008) and they have updated their menu and some of their dishes and redecorated--ALL GREAT IMPROVEMENTS on an already great establishment. The staff (at least the ones we met) are all local and very friendly. ENJOY

Definitely check out Martha Jane's Kitchen in Hatteras. They have a Sunday Brunch with champagne cocktails and live music in the courtyard. Very fun! The baked stuffed french toast put me in a sugar coma....best french toast I've tasted!

Pop's Raw Bar in Buxton is great. Not fancy, just a local bar, but the food is wonderful. Usually those little local places are the best. However...if you want really upscale, pricy, with lots of views, etc....pass this place up. It's just for the food & drinks.

Roccos Pizza is by far the best pizza place down there. We always get it at least 2-3 times. You should always take a drive up to Kill DEvil Hills to eat Capt'n Franks. Once you eat there you will make it a tradtion. They have the best hotdogs and nacho fries on the East coast HANDS DOWN!!!!

We've been coming here since the 1950s. Excellent restaurants keep appearing, then going out of business. Losing the Pilot House, Austin Creek Grille, etc., has really hurt. However, right now in 2009, the best on the island are...

Special Occasion (quite pricey but very good) : The Pamlico Inn, Carolina Blue, Dinky's, Breakwater.

Family (great food, reasonable prices) : The Captain's Table (our new number one after two years of steady improvement), Dolphin Den, Diamond Shoals.

Best Newcomer : Rusty's. Formerly Buoy's.

Most Over Rated and Over Hyped : Dirty Dick's, Sonny's.

We just spent the week camping up and down OBX for the fifth straight year. We don't eat out much but we love the Dolphin Den in Avon, especially the local fresh fish specials and their soups. We also love Dinky's in Hatteras. Although they are expensive, the food and the view of the sun setting over the sound are unbeatable. For lunch we like Franks OBX Dog House in Waves. And we love the huge selection of custards and sundaes at a place in Buxton that also has mini golf (sorry, I can't remember the name)

We visited the Sandbar and Grille in Buxton last night for dinner and had a wonderful experience! The beautiful view over the sound was very relaxing as we enjoyed our food. The service was great, our waitress was fast and efficient, but at the same time we did not feel rushed through the meal. My husband, a non-seafood eater had the mozzarella chicken and said it was excellent. It is difficult to find a seafood restaurant on the OBX that knows how to make good "turf" plates as well! I had a bowl of thehatteras clam chowder, it was amazing. For my entree, I had the fried shrimp. The shrimp were very large, very fresh and they gave me 15 of them! We took our dessert with us - homemade tiramisu - so yummy. Everything from the dressings to the sauces is made fresh and you can tell! The Sandbar grille is a great choice for those who love seafood or not. We'll be back!
