my 11 year old daughters point of view of the obx

the outer banks is a magical place were any and everything is! it all starts when your told to help look for a beach house i think of it as fun! its the 1st thing you do before you start planning! 2nd thing you do is start counting down we usually book 30 days before but sometimes sooner the 3rd thing you do is start cleaning my mom cannot come home to a dirty house. 4th thing you do is start packing this is when i know '' WE ARE REALLY GOING!'' its also fun! 5th thing you do is call the kennel sadly this year my little yorkie Molly cant come:( 6th thing you do is load the car the night before so we can leave at 7:00 AM in the morning I make the breakfast the night before too so we can grab it and go i love to bake! 7th thing we do is get up leave and be on our way! we usually stop at powels fruits and veggie stand on our way there strawberrys are yummy! they never make it to the house lol then we get there at about 12:00 pm so we stop for a relaxing lunch my dad has 2 beers i dont know why but he says its the start of his vacation or somthing? then we head to the house for a nap then we head out to the grocery store and walmart for some sand castle material for my dads HUGE sand castle he makes with me then we go back and my dad grills while im in the pool my mom is preparing the veggies then we head in for dinner then I go to watch a movie on the tv and my mom and dad head in the hot tub then when I am done with my movie i go out and say goodnight.

that is always what we do every time!

the outer banks is where stress from school melts away the obx is where the stress from my friends melt away and the more i think about it.. My family gets closer.

Beautiful. Our daddy has a few beers too and says it also gets his vacation started. We do pretty much the same preparations...we used to stop at Powell's too. We do breakfast on the Bay Bridge tunnel. All these great traditions of your family will be passed on to your own family one day. So glad it's becoming an important part of your memories of being a child!

That's a nice account of your obx tradition-tell your daughter a job done well. It makes me think so much of my own memories. We usually get vegetables and fruit on our way down too, especially the strawberries which are terrific.

This is a family place, and forever memories are made early on. That little girl will come back regularly, and probably come down as a mom and a grandmom. Perhaps she'll choose to live here. My daughter did.

This was nice to hear. It is nice to see that our future generation appreciates vacationing in a place like the Outer Banks. I sometimes think I get more excited than my children. Thanks for sharing. I hope my children feel the same way. I have a feeling they do but it's nice to see it in writing.

Nice Kid....
Nice Dad too....always see too many dads that never get their rear end off the chair let alone build huge sand castles.

Now, that's what I am talking about. You are bringing tears to a grown man's eyes. Alas, our boys are now almost 20 and 16. So, some of that anticapation and excitement are now gone.

But, boy do I remember those days. We always did (and still do) start our vacation with lunch and a couple of "vacation beers" for Dad. After that, the sheer joy of finding our house was next. Then, it was the mad dash through the house to see all the cool stuff, followed by an equally mad dash to the beach.

Wow, I miss the days when the kids were younger!! At the risk of sounding like an old guy, cherish those vacations when the kids add so much joy and excitment to things. The wife and I have learned that those days pass very quickly, and once gone, are gone for good. Honestly, it seemed like those days would last forever.

Now it is the wife and I who act like little kids when we get there !! Thanks for sharing and thanks for allowing me to take a stroll down memory lane.

That was wonderful!!!! We've always spent our summer vacations on the OBX, and our boys are now 17 and 21, and still love going! What is amazing is that at 11 years old, she is feeling everything us old folks feel about the OBX! There is something about driving over that bridge - as if your stresses just float out the window (I always open my window and let out a big "WOO WHOO" when going over the bridge...that is how I start my vacation!!) It IS a magical place!

We've been vacationing in the OBX for almost my entire life. I have so many wonderful memories of our family vacations (too many to count). I recently took on the task of sorting all of our old OBX pics, but there are so many that the years all blend together. We enjoyed every single year (even when we were teenagers and didn't want to be seen w/our parents). My husband and I have been back on our own the past few years, but next year, the entire family is going. I can't wait to relive some of our childhood memories! I am so blessed that my parents took us to such a wonderful place for vacation. My heart belongs to the OBX.

My kids know two beaches: OBX and Ocean City NJ.

They call the latter Ocean City or New Jersey.

They call the OBX, The Beach.

OP-continue to support your child's appreciation and wonder of the unique and so very special place. You'll pass on the love to another generation, and create amazing memories and experiences.

I am glad your child as well as all of you feel so positive about your experiences here with us. My oldest child (30) grew up as a surfer, as I did. We are happy y'all feel this way.
