Subject: December in OBX
We are thinking of having a family reunion in OBX at Christmas time. What is the weather like, and what activities are available? Are rentals readily avaiable? Thanks!

I was talking to an ice cream store owner in Duck about how dead it must be in the winter. He assured me that Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks were very busy, but after that he closes the store for a few months. December's average temperature is in the 50's.

It can be cold, but Jan-Feb are the coldest months. I have walked the beach with a light jacket some years and others require a big coat. There is not much of anything going on that involves the ocean so look elsewhere for actvities. A few places close after Thanksgiving but most stay open all year long, there are no lines!

It can be very cold or not. Most places are open for Christmas and a lot of folks celebrate here. Used to be mostly owners down, but lately there are more and more renters. Nice for a change of pace.

We spent New Years in OBX last year and it was beautiful, low 60's.

For the past 3-4 years our extended family has been going to OBX for the week between Christmas and New Years. We've had great luck with the weathers -- usually temps in the 60s, even a few days in the low 70s. It can be cold and windy if the weather turns bad, but those days have been few and far between. What a great break from Cleveland winter! It's now a tradition we don't want to give up.

this will be our 2nd trip during Christmas. The one surprise was 1 out of 10 homes with people, the rest empty. It was great. walkthe beach and see no one. Very few stores and restaurants open, but enough.
