Subject: First timers to OBX
I know this may be early for us, but we'll be visiting OBX next summer. By reading brocures and internet, to me (and i may be wrong, as uaual), it seems that Nags Head seems to be the spot where most of the "action" is. Is this a good spot for people with families, kids ages range from 4 yrs old thru 12 yrs? Also, we were looking at homes on the ocean between MP 10 and MP 11. Is this a good location and are there any stores, restuarants and bars near by?

Hope to hear soon and thanks in advance for your advice.

We've been vacationing in Nags Head for about 13 years at Milepost 10 (oceanside). This is a great spot for families and kids (as is the whole Outer Banks). At MP 10 and 11, you are located convenient to grocery stores (Food Lion), and many restaurants and bars within a mile either way of you. You'll find yourself hopping in the car to explore the surrounding area and you'll see how many stores, bars, resturants are nearby.

It take a off season trip to answer all those questions. If you get a long week end in the winter that you can go some realty companies will let you look at the house if it is not occupied. I do this in march if I get time . After your first visit you will realize what area is best for you I like Hatteras my self. Take a look at this site it might help you learn more.

You have lots of time. Suggest you also look north to Duck and Corolla. Great places for familirs, plenty of shopping and attractions and dining, and less crowded beaches.
Click on the where to stay button and explore the excellent websites showing what is available in the various areas.
We rented in Corolla and Duck 7 years when the kids were around before we bought in Duck.
With a few possible exceptions, Duck and Corolla are more upscale than Nags Head, but neither is a Hilton Head Island.

We are going to the OBX for our first time on 8/27 and staying in Corolla (Ocean Hills) and we also have children ages 4-12 (what a funny coincidence!), so I'll post and let you and everyone else know how we liked it.

I'm a little bit partial to Hatteras Island's Waves/Rodanthe/Salvo and even Avon areas. It's less built up and you'll never hit traffic down there like you do up north. We were there in June (yes in season, but it was like that in past years when we were there in august and sept) and the traffic going up to Duck and Corolla made me want to pull my hair out! Nags Head can get a little crowded, but no matter where you go, the beaches are really nice. Nags Head is nice if you want to do a lot of dining out or shopping. I prefer south as it is less built up and a little more quiet...So, I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

If you want to feel like you are still in Suburbia then Nags Head is the place to be. If you want to feel like you are in a quaint seaside village then go South to the Hatteras Island area.

Kill Devil and Nags Head are where most of the chain stores and restaurants are. I prefer Duck because it's quieter and quaint with it's little gift shops and sound front restaurants. My suggestion would be to try to find a place to stay with a community pool so that your children will meet others. There are a lot of places that you can rent bikes by the week or even a kayak at a reasonable rate. They'll deliver it and pick it up too. That's usually a lot of fun for the kids. In Duck and Southern Shores there is a special path for bicycle riders. There really isn't a whole lot in the line of amusements, some rides, go-carts and minature golf places. I just came back, and can't wait to return. Enjoy!

Just came back from OBX on 8/14. We stayed in a condo just off the beach road at MP 9.5. We were within walking/biking distance of many restaurants and stores. The traffic going to/from Duck and Corolla on weekends is awful. It takes about 1/2 hour or more to go the 6-7 miles to Duck from where Rt 12 and 158 intersect. I would recommend staying in Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head w/ kids the age of yours.

I'm thinking of renting a house in OBX - not sure where exactly but I'm getting the impression that beach access may be difficult if you do not stay ocean front. Is this true? There does not seem to be any public parking. Also I'm looking for a wide, white soft beach, are OBX beaches like this?

We rented a fabulous house around MP 8 in KDH last month. Village Realty rents the house and the number is KD04...fabulous! We wanted for nothing, very well supplied house. 2 FP's, pool, hot tub, jacuzzi tubs in 3 of the bathrooms, even a FP in one of the bedrooms/bathroom.

We are planning to do a family vacation in OBX 4/4/09 - 4/11/09. Our adult children and grand children. That's 9 adults and 3 children, age 3 - 12. Want oceanfront rental home. Would like heated pool due to time of year. also game room. Our first vist to OBX and thinking we'd like to stay on Duck Island. Feeling overwhelmed in our attempt to find just the right rental.
