Subject: Need beach advice for Ocracoke area
We're coming to to OBX the second week of August. We're staying on Ocracoke and I'm interested in having my 11 year old daughter take a surfing lesson or renting a boogie board for her. She's a strong swimmer. On the flip side I have a 6 yr old son who's ok in the water. Is there a good place to accomodate both of them?
Thanks for any help you can give!

What help do you need? You can rent boogie boards but they are so inexpensive you might just want to buy one. There are fewer access points to the beach on Ocracoke. Just pick a place and see what the waves are like. Since the island faces the ocean in one direction (unlike Hatteras Island that has beaches facing east and almost south) the waves are pretty much the same all along the Ocracoke beaches. Have fun.

We're from Kansas City. So the beach experience is pretty new to us. We went to Cape Cod 2 years ago in June,so it was cold. We went to beaches on both sides of the cape so I remember that the ocean side was rougher, but more exciting. Any comparison? I'm mostly concerned about safety. Do the beaches on Ocracoke have lifeguards?

There is one area on Ocracoke with lifeguards. It also has a nice bathhouse with showers. There is a nice surfshop that gives private surf lessons as well as group. Its called Ride the Wind. Its right on the corner near Silver Lake, you can't miss it.

I found Ride the Wind on the internet. Good to know that the beach there has lifeguards. Sounds like it might be our spot. Thank you!

The VERY BEST beach is the lifeguard beach. I found the Lifeguards very professional and attentive (not flirty HS kids). Even during peak, the beach is uncrowded and the waves perfect for a 7-8 yo. Preteen will love the breakers. Foot showers and clean restrooms too.
