Subject: Southern Shores vs Duck?
I would like some thoughts on Southern Shores versus Duck. Any comments that you could give would be appreciated.

They are so cloase to each other, I've got to think the beach and surf is very similar. I love the Duck community, but don't prefer the beach there so I always head up to Corolla these days.

Duck is much more of a community, with a small town feel. There are shops and restaurants in Duck as well. Nothing wrong with Southern Shores, but, Duck has a very nice feel to it.

The beach is the same in both communities and SS is so close to the village of Duck that there's not much difference so it depends if you really want to walk to town. then again, north Duck is probably farther away from the village than SS. duck allows dogs on the beach, SS doesn't. You are closer to grocery stores in SS.

can you tell me approximately the distance between ss and duck (in miles) and from KDH? Thanks!

About 14 of 15 miles from north border of Duck to the KH/KDH border. Probably 25-30 minutes with regular traffic.
If you are east on NC 12 in SS, you're oceanfront or maybe 5 or six back. If you are west of NC 12, crossing the road is no picnic in the summer, even though there are crosswalks with yield signs. If you don't care to walk to the ocean in SS, there is a very nice town beach and parking area at the end of Hillcrest.
Duck has free yoga and pilates in the mornings at 0730 and a town park with canoe kayak launch.
Maybe tell us what areas you are looking at in SS and Duck, and we can give some more specific help.

SS and Duck meet so if your in the middle of SS, Duck is about 2 - 3 miles away. SS to KDH - about 5 miles between the two.

For me the biggest turnoff about Duck is the traffic. On a cloudy or rainy day you sit for hours in it because there is nowhere else to go.

Hi,

My family has had a home in Southern Shores for over thirty years and one of the main differences between Southern Shores and Duck is that Southern Shores is mostly residential. Duck does have a small town feel with restaurants and shopping etc. I find Southern Shores to be a lot more quiet and private than Duck. You can easily get to Duck within minutes from Southern Shores unless it is a Saturday morning as that is one of the change over days. There is an awesome bike path from Southern Shores to Duck as well. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Have Fun!

Partial to Southern Shores but love to go to the shops in Duck which are close by. It is nice that you have some walking/bike paths in both towns. There is a lot of traffic in Duck because people are looking left and right to find places to shop or eat. Just park somewhere and walk and you'll be OK. In Southern Shores we seem closer to RT 158 shops and things to do as well as Duck. We found back routes through Chicahauk Estates that takes you directly to RT158 around Walmart and it bypasses the traffic. I also thought S.Shores beach was a little nicer than Duck but we only stayed once in Duck.

I believe if you stay in Duck there is no beach parking so you will need to walk to the beach. In Southern Shores there are a couple of beach lots, for Southern Shore residents and visitors with passes only. Our rental company gives us 2 passes when we rent. The houses also seem closer together in Duck. We've stayed in Southern Shores for the past 7 years and love it.
