Subject: Carova vs Corolla vs ??
We are traveling to the OBX in a month, renting a couple houses for a family reunion. Some of us want to stay in Carova, rent a 4x4, and some are bringing their boat w/truck and trailer so need to be in town. Any suggestions? There will be 15 or so of us, three families (all siblings), 8 young men between the ages of 17 and 25. Want to get something rented today! Thanks for your suggestions.

Carova is sooo far away from everything, though some people love that. There is nothing up there. 4x4s are quite expensive to rent. Then there is the issue where can you leave your car.
Hauling 15 people up to Carova in a 4 seat jeep is a lot of trips. Figure 30-40 minutes each way from where the road ends.
Unless you have experienced beach drivers, beach driving can be a hassle. I think the 8 young men might die of boredom up there. Check Corolla Light Resort. Top notch, lots of near amenities.

Cost of renting a 4X4 for a week is going to be expensive be it a Suburban for all eight of you men or two Jeep Wranglers to split you up in to two groups of four. Not taking into account the house rental. Not quite sure why or what kind of boat you are hauling up here, but you can't launch a boat off the Ocean in Corolla or Corova unless you are a commercial fisherman. As far as the soundside goes the sound is very shallow (2-6ft deep) lots of prop fouling grass just to launch & mud/sand flats & the tides will really have an effect. Once you are stuck you can't pole the boat off, you just have to wait for about six hours to float it back in to any place you can find. No boat launch sites on the sound side except one next to Currituck Lighthouse & Whalehead. Shallow draft skifts with mud motors are what the locals use if they set crab pots & they know what they are doing. Might not be for you. Cottonmouth snakes are very commom to the soundside & they are in the brooding season.

Hey 37550, Currituck Sound is brackish fresh water. Is is not a tidal sound, unlike the others. Winds move the water. I live on the sound and a couple of days of 15-20 mph NE winds will push the water out several hundred yards.

Last time I checked, Outer Banks Chrysler Jeep Dodge gets $119 and change a day for a 2 door Wrangler.

You can launch your boat at the docks at the Whalehead Club in Corolla. Mind the winds. Seems like every year someone moors their boat a couple of hundred feet off the dock, doesn't watch the winds, and on take out day the water is gone and the boat is resting on the bottom.

37655: What size/type of boat do you think would be Ok to launch at the dock at the Whalehead Club, Corolla. Thanks for the advice.

very small 19' maybe. The sound isn't great for boating unless you know where the "holes" are
