Subject: Favorite places to eat on Hatteras Island?
Hi! We're coming to the OBX in a couple of weeks for the first time. We'll be staying in about the middle of Hatteras Island, and we don't want to cook on vacation! So, where are the best places to eat that we can take a couple of kids with us? Thanks for any help!!

Dolphin Den (Avon) - Great local, long-standing restaurant. Nothing terribly fancy, but a good dining experience. Lisa's Pizza (Rodanthe) - Popular with locals and visitors alike. Good casual dining experience. One other suggestion is to ask at your rental agency when you check in if they have heard any good reports on some of the newer local restuarants.

I can echo the dolphin den reccomendation as well as Lisa's Pizza (We stay every year in Avon/Buxton and we always stop at Lisa's on the way down.

Also the fish house, particularly for lunch is AWESOME. Buoy's in Buxton is also very good.

Quarterdeck in frisco has been there FOREVER and is always good (as long as I can remember anyway - been going since I was a pup)

Breakwaters in hatteras is good, but upscale and more expensive (you're going to drop at least $25 per entree)

Sonny's is great too, especially for breakfast.

Hop on the ferry and grab a bite at Howard's Pub on Okracoke Island.

those are my recommendations.

We're going in about 24 days and we can't wait!

check out this page too though it may prove helpful.

Bouy's is no longer Bouy's. It is now Rusty's Surf and Turf. We've gone a couple of times and the food is excellent! He has a slightly different flavor but it's all good. A little pricey but still really good.

Diamond Shoals Restaurant in Buxton. Great breakfast-- excellent seafood for dinner.(They have a seafood market and get it fresh from there to cook.) More reasonable prices than some.

The Avon Cafe in Avon is terrific.(Don't confuse it with Cafe 12, also in Avon. -Nice but a wrap and burger place) Avon Cafe is a bit more expensive than some other seafood places but the food and service is fantastic.

Finnigins in Buxton is delicious.
We always make sure we eat there at least once when we come down on vacation.

Buoy's is no longer?

My wife and I got married at cape hatteras and we took our bridal party out for lunch there the day of the wedding...great food and great fun (a great memory) We've made it a point to have lunch there at least once a year ever since.

We missed going to the beach last year for the first time in 10 years due to a new baby just being born in the summer, so we took our oldest (5 at the time) on a disney world trip in the winter (for one last only child vacation) instead.

See what happens when you skip a year! :sigh:

Finnegans is the one of the better restaurants on Hatteras Island. They have local seafood with great sandwiches and even pizza. I'm not sure but, I think this is a locals place to eat out.

Oh, please. Do you work there? I am a Buxton local and we do not eat at Finnegan's. We go there for the beer, the music and the pool table and maybe a pizza/ snacks but we do not go there to dine. There are so many better places to eat on Hatteras Island.

We just returned yesterday from a first visit stay on Hatteras-We did cook at home but the places we would suggest-
Coastal Blue-Avon?
Mack daddys-Avon
these are both a little pricey but worth it.
Also, Hot Tuna for Lunch and
Lisas Pizza for a break in seafood.
i will post more when I think o some more about it!
Enjoy!

It must not be a local that owns Finnegins. Many people enjoy this place. Be nice to locals....unless you aren't one.

Top Dog at Rodanthe, MadCrabber, Cafe 12 at Avon, or go down to Okracoke and try the creekside cafe. Or...Buy your own shrimp/scallops/crabs etc. and cook them at home.

The Fish House is great, Toppers has the best pizza, we look forward to it all year long! Froggy Dog is always good, too. Pickled Steamer has a good crabcake sandwich.

Can't believe no one mentioned Orange Blossom. Even though it has been through re-ownerships, it always has great breakfast, coffee and the best uglies anywhere! Hope its still there this year!

fish house has always been our favorite but we were dissapointed with it this week. Opens at 11 and we showed up at 11:20 to find they were out of hatteras chowder and the crustini appetizer my wife loves....not sure how that works since they just opened, but OK.

Prices had went up a little and portions went WAY down. Food was still fantastic and service good, but it just wasn't the same fish house we loved so much.

Dolphin den was exceptional this year.

Mad crabber has always been good, but we haven't gone this year and we've always like diamond shoals and quaterdeck as well but haven't been to either yet this year.

just two more days til we go home :-(
