Subject: What should we pack?
Hi - Coming to the OBX for the first time this summer and renting a house on the beach. We are coming with our 2 year old toddler. We know we need to bring baby items, but what else do we need to bring? So far, we figured out that we will need our own sheets, and towels. What else is typically not included (eg. pillows, laundry supplies, dishware etc.) in a house rental that we will need?

Thanks!

P.S. Any parents with toddlers who have been to the OBX, please feel free suggest things that I should consider bringing for baby (besides essentials like crib, high chair, potty, etc.)

Check with your rental agency. Many houses I have stayed in have had baby equipment in them. Some however do not. Dishware should be in your rental house. We have been going to OBX for 7 years now and my youngest is 5. If your house has stairs or a deck without gates, you may want to bring a gate or two for safety reasons. You may want to bring a sun tent or something like that for the beach the sun gets really hot. Most houses have pillows, but some do not have linens and towels. I used to pack everything, now I stop and buy most of the stuff down there. Laundry soap, dish soap, hand soap, cleaning supplies, TP is not provided. Bring Beach towels - several, sand toys (although some houses have them) some type of flotation device for the little one if your house has a pool. some people like to bring a blow up pool for the beach. There are stores there and you should be able to purchase anything you forgot.

Your rental company website should have a list of things all their homes are suppose to have in them. Most all have coffee makers but you will need the filters and these can vary. A trip to the local grocery is almost always needed and you can get them then. Toilet paper, paper towel, etc will be needed. Homes have dishes, pots, pans, silverware for you.
Check your rental listing, many provide baby chairs and they will say so. If they don't list it, don't expect it there.

2nd vote for baby gates (bring or rent them). You don't want the little one wandering too close to the steps.

Bring a small pool (or buy one at Walmart)...ocean was just too sacry for our 2 yr old. Brought pool to beach and she had a blast. Don't forget the sunscreen either...a must for everyone!

Many houses come with baby stuff, including gates. Definitely check with your booking agency as many, in the present competitvie market, offer complementary linen service for towels and bedlinens. You will need detergent etc. for laundry but almost all kitchens come pretty well equipped. Stores are pretty convenient but you probably want to avoid going as soon as you check into the house as there will be long lines. And who wants to stand in line with the beach waiting for you?

Beach Chairs

Definitely don't forget the binoculars for watching the dolphin and such in the surf from your cottage deck or while sitting on the beach.

For everyone's sake....don't forget to bring the daily nap schedule. My kids stuck to it and my sister pushed her kids all day. Guess who had a bunch of tired, grouchy kids all week.

You can rent almost anything you need if you don't want to pack and they will deliver it to your rental.

Absolutely baby gates - we brought both kinds and only one worked but kept 2 1/2 safe. Also gold stars for regular nap schedule - it really made our vacation calmer. I loved taking our granddaughter and can't wait to take the 2nd one.

We also took one of those fold out children's couches that makes into a bed. It was great for little one sitting on it and nap time. We have taken that Disney Princess cough on every vacation for 4 years.
