Subject: Driving down with frozen food? Does it last?
We'd like to pre-cook meals for ease of use on arrival. How long has anyone traveled with pre-cooked FROZEN meals in a cooler and still had them last? Assuming a cooler is packed with ice that is. Wondering if they would last through the night if we kept packing them with new ice?
Thoughts?

We bring a lot of frozen foods with us. It all depends on your cooler. My cooler will keep ice for 3 solid days. Just pay attention and try to shade it as much as possible.

Yes - We have done this a few times. We have about a 6.5 hour drive and I usually check the cooler once during the trip and add ice if need be. A good cooler will make a difference too. It's a good idea and can make dinners much easier while you are there.

most of the time we make something and freeze it a few days before and let it thaw on the way down from ohio. when we get there it is ready to cook. that way we don't have to go to the store or out to eat the first nite

We have kept food frozen/cold for a large group of 40 people for 3 days. We were always the meal planners when we went camping wilth our Celtic reenactment group and like everyone else said..good cooler, shade and ice does the trick. The food should survive the trip easily. We would also duck tape the coolers with the frozen goods to make sure it was sealed during the drive..

Yes and the lasagna will not be ready to heat the first night as it will still be frozen. We learned the hard way.

We have about an 8 hour drive from pa, we have had no problem with things thawing out. We put frozen roast steaks and burger in cooler top off with ice and don't open till we check into out rental, which is sometimes 13 or 14 hours from when we leave pa.

We also drive from PA. Last year my husband bought dry ice at the grocery store. It kept everything quite frozen overnight as we drove down and it was still frozen when we finally checked in at 5:00

We drive almost 7 hours and what we brought frozen was still frozen when we arrived. It wasn't pre-cooked food though. We packed it good with ice and ice packs and didn't open it until we arrived at the house. HTH

We have driven from Indiana, 15 hours, with frozen food and never had a problem. We have just added ice if we didn't drive straight through.

We always bring our own meats, etc. We freeze up some plastic soda bottles ahead of time and with the addition of ice in the cooler everything stays good and cold. You can always replenish your ice along the way, if need be.

duct tape your cooler and avoid temptation to open it and check--it will still be frozen when you arrive.

Freeze a gallon of milk to use as your ice if you have room.

You can buy dry ice at some grocery stores-it should keep your food cold
