Subject: The Perfect Spot
This year will be my first trip to OBX and I'm looking for something in particular, but without knowing the different areas, it's hard to decide where to rent. What we are looking for is a rental house on the beach. We want to stay in an area that is not overly crowded, but not completely empty either. We want the seclusion, but we also would like to be within a few minutes of restaurants, shopping, groceries, fishing, etc. The Corolla area seems like what we are looking for, but I don't know for sure. I also found some places in Carova, but I don't really know where that is. I would love to get some advice from you! Thanks!!

I don't know how secluded you want to be but if this is your first time there my vote would be South Nags Head. The beaches are less crowed. From there you are minutes from bars and restaurants just a little north up the road. Bodie Island Lighthouse, Pea Island and Hatteras National Seashore are minutes south. A nice day trip south to Hatteras and Ocracoke. Few more miles north are Jockeys Ridge State Park, Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve and Wright Bros. memorial. A nice day trip north to Corolla. You are pretty close to Roanoke Island across the sound. There you have the aquarium, Manteo waterfront, airplane rides, The Lost Colony, and the Elizabethan Gardens. A little further across the sound is Alligator River Wildlife Refuge. Look into going in the off season. We do September. It's great hardly any crowd. Start by getting your Outer Banks travel guide and a map from outerbanks.org

OP...We have always enjoyed the Corolla area. Carova is the four drive only area. The acess to your house would be the beach. Secluded but not as convenient as might like. Caraova is north of Corolla maybe six/seven miles? Anyway, over the years we have vacationed mid-June, July, and August. I prefer mid June just before prime season starts. Weather can be a little iffy but we've always had good luck. If you can come that early you can get a pre-season price break. We have had excellent service from Twiddy and Brindley Beach Vacations. Here is some info on the Corolla area. Lighthouse Drive runs parallel to Whalehead Beach. Nice location but there are several other 'communities' in the Corolla area as well...Sanderling, Buck Island, Pine Island, Ocean Sands, Ocean Hill, Villages at Ocean Hill. Corolla is a nice community. Grocery shopping is convenient in Corolla (Food Lion and Harris Teeter) and there are a number of shops and restaurants located in Tim Buck II Shopping Village just across form the Food Lion complex. Go to the top of the page. Type in 'Tim Buck II' in the search window. Try both 'web' and 'site'. Should find good info regarding the shops, etc. Just a little north of the Food Lion complex (shops and restaurants as well in that complex)is the Corolla Light Village Shops. More shopping and restaurants. You can watch the sunrise on the beach in the morning and the sunsets over the sound in the evening. The Corolla Lighthouse, the Whalehead Club, the Wildlife Education Center(history of the Sound) are very nice. If you think you would enjoy a kayak tour of the Sound sign up early at the Wildlife Education Center. Check out NC Bar-b-que just north of the Corolla lighthouse. Rent a Jeep and drive the 4x4 beach. Maybe see some horses. Or book a spot for a paid tour of the four wheel drive area. Don't know what you are into but you can rent jet skis, go parasailing, boogie boarding, fishing, crabbing, volley ball on the beach, bike riding, putt-puut golf, etc. We like the Dockside Seafood Market in the Food Lion complex for fresh sea food. Below is the Corolla Village website. Provides a brief history, list of restaurants, shops, etc. Duck is south of Corolla...nice village with more nice shops/restaurants. But Corolla has my vote. And if you want to see other area attractions
you can drive south to the other lighthouses, Jockey Ridge, Wright Bros Memorial, etc. Hatteras is approximately 70 miles or so south of Corolla. From Hatteras you can take the ferry to Okracoke Island. Nice day trip. At the top and bottom of this page you will find "WHERE TO EAT","WHAT TO DO", "WHERE TO STAY", "PLAN YOUR TRIP", "EVENT CALENDAR", "MAPS". Helpful info. I should add the communities south of Corolla are nice. Such as south Nags Head. The further south you go (Rodanthe, Waves, Avon, Hatteras, Okracoke) the less congestion. But fewer shops and restaurants. Just depends on what appeals to you and your family. Here is the Corolla website. Hope this helps.

Forget about Carova for what you want. Carova is in 4WD country, so you'd need something suitable for off road. It is about 10 miles north of where the road ends, and boy is it isolated.
Corolla sounds like a good choice for what you want.

Have to agree with the person who said South Nags Head, a great central location to everything but quieter.

You need to go to South Nags Head for your first trip. It is off by itself but very close to everything. Minutes to attractions, restaurants and Outlet mall..... Why someone would suggest Carova when you said you wanted to be close to restaurants is a mystery to me. It is a drive along the beach (no roads)in a 4 X 4 vehicle to get to everything from that area. It is not for the first time person unless they really want to be away and don't mind a pain of a drive to food stores, restaurants, attractions etc. From S Nags Head, which is more centrally located, you could head north and see Carona and head south and see Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island (take a free ferry to get to that one-- great fun). They make great day trips and you can see if those areas might be good for your next trip but S Nags Head is is a great first time area-- or any time.
