Subject: Staying On Roanoke Island
My mom and I will be vacationing during the second week of June. Our plan is to head south (Ocracoke & Hatteras) one day and then north (Duck to Nags Head) the other. I'm thinking of staying on Roanoke Island? I'd love input on Roanoke Island. Good or bad.

Not many rentals I know of there. I don't recall any of the realty companies having rentals there. Good luck.

The only rentals I know of on Roanoake are at Pirate's Cove Marina. Not much else to rent there, especially with water views. Roanoake is really only 5 min. from Nags Head. That may be a better bet.

There are quite a few good B & B or hotel type accomodations in Manteo. It is a nice place to stay for a day or two and get to know the town. Nice place to walk around and be relaxed, and not far from Nags Head either.

Roanoke is a nice, small island in the sound. It is 5 miles across a causeway to the ocean and the villages of Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills etc where there are dozens of motels on the ocean etc. It all depends on what you are looking for. I enjoy walking the waterfront in Manteo and there are many nice shops there too. If you are expecting to be near the ocean when you are on Roanoke Island, you aren't. If you understand that it is a quaint village 5 miles from the ocean then go for it.

All the other info is right on. For your information there are three older "Motels" in town, Dare Haven, Duke of Dare and the Elizabethan Inn. They are all 1960's vintage, nothing much to speak of. The Elizabethan Inn, although I have never stayed there, appears better and has an indoor pool and gym.

Thanks everyone for your input. I've looked up the Elizabethan Inn and it doesn't look bad. I'm also fine with staying "off" beach so Roanoke Island looks very appealing with plenty to do.

Manteo "must sees"...Aquarium, waterfront shopping/dining, Lost Colony, Weeping Radish (samples of housebrews awesome!)

Ocracoke...and the journey to it are my favorite things! The ferry ride is a great change of pace...4wheel to beach on ramp 72. Pony Island Inn is absolutely the best value/cleanest/pool/friendly...see/ask Candy. Howard's Pub a fav...Plenty else to do as well...galleries, hemp store, bookstores, decoys..and watersports galore.

Duck & Corolla are upscaled..proportioned nicely, all ameneties. Pricey.

Nags Head/KDH/Kitty Hawk...mid-Atlantic America's Riveria.
