hi, for those of us on a budget, what are some free things to do on the OBX?

Lighthouses, Wright Bros. Memorial (not free, but really cheap), Jockey's Ridge (sometimes there are events like kite festivals), drive through Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, go crabbing in the sound.

Watch the fishing boats come in at the end of the day. Go to the Wildlife Education Center in Corolla. Visit the waterfront in Manteo. Visit Chicamacomico Life Saving Station in Rodanthe. Drive to Hatteras Village and take the free ferry over to Ocracoke Island.
Take your 4WD vehicle off road north of Corolla and drive the beach up to Carova, hopefully seeing the wild horses along the way. People watch.

The center is located in Currituck Heritage Park on Highway 12 in Corolla, next to Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Whalehead Club.
The Park is approximately 2 miles north of the Food Lion Complex in Corolla. The Currituck Lighthouse is also in the immediate area. Below is the Education Center Website with operation hours, map/location, other good info.

OP...go to the top of this page. Click on "WHAT TO DO", "CALENDAR OF EVENTS" and "PLAN YOUR TRIP".
You will find a good amount of info that might help you.

P.S. If you think you would like to try your luck at crabbing the Whalehead Club area is located on the Sound and is a good spot. Also a great location for watching the spectacular sunsets over the Sound. And it is free!

I didn't even know the wildlife center existed! I will have to go next time I come down. Also going to church has always been a part of our vacation. Very nice to feel connected that way.

We spend most of our time on the beach and in the water--the obvious freebies.

That's the great thing about ObX! You can't beat it for value and there are lots of things to do that don't cost $. One idea, if you belong to your local zoo, the NC Aquarium on Roanoake accepts reciprocal zoo memberships for admission. Call ahead to check. Manteo Waterfront area is nice to walk through in the evening. Stop by the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center around 4pm daily to see what the fishing charters bring in. Jockey's Ridge is free. Go in the evening for dune climbing when it's not so hot. The breeze at the top is perfect for kite flying. Take the free ferry to Ocracoke Island for a nice day trip.

It's free to visit the lighthouses, but there is a fee to climb them. Some people are not healthy enough or able to climb them, but they are still amazing to see up close and take pictures of. Also, some of them have museum type information in their gift shops.

Visit the Lighthouse's and ask if they offer activities witht he Park Ranger, I know that Bodie Lighthouse does free activities, like campfires, nature walks and crabbing . Also check the visitors centers, when we visited Currituck, the visitor center there was very helpfull and showed us quite a few free or inexpensive activities for the kids. Have a great trip.

Bring bikes and ride around the quant towns, shell hunt, fish, crab, fly a kite, explore the little shops and back roads, ride the ferry over to Ocracoke and explore, take a nap, read a good book, watch people go by on the beach, visit the musuems, visit some of the old cemetarys on the island (some are very old!), chase crabs, eat an apple-ugly and remember to have a good time cause before you know it, you'll be back home thinking...Boy that week went by fast!!!
