Subject: Kitty Hawk questions
We will be staying at Kitty Hawk during the first week of August! We cant wait! We've never been to the area and dont know too much about the area. We're a family of 5 with 3 teens 14,15,17.

Are the grocery stores close by Kitty Hawk or should we go before we get there?

What are your favorite things to do near Kitty Hawk? How about nearby? Would you recommend taking a day and heading south to Cape Hatteras and or Ocracoke?

I luv the beach and would be content to sit there all week all day long every day. However some of my gang gets antsy and like to do other things as well.

Thank you for all your help...this is great!

You will find grocery stores, restaurants, bars and souvenir / beach shops all nearby. You may want to drive down to the Hatteras Lighthouse. Just follow Rt.12 south. Shouldn't be anymore than an hour. Very cool drive too. There is a decent aquarium over on Roanoke Island too. Manteo is a cool little town over there as well. Ocracoke would end up being almost a full day for you. Might be worthwhile too, just know that it will be a day-long trip. All of you will have a blast.

The kids might enjoy this place set to open later this spring.

A day trip to Hatteras and Ocracoke midweek is an excellent idea. Leave early in the morning and the kids may sleep. You'll see Bodie Island Lighthouse, cross the bridge, see the Serendipity house from Nights in Rodanthe, see Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, catch the free 40 minute ferry from Hatteras Village to Ocracoke (take your digital camera and bread for the seagulls), drive into Ocracoke Village, see the Ocracoke Lighthouse, the British Cemetary, have some lunch, take the kids to the pirate store, and head back to the ferry.
If you do this mid-week, you can get from KH to the Hatteras ferry in about an hour and a half to two hours not counting stops.
It's a fun, free trip with lifetime photo ops.
You'll have a great time.

You may want to consider signing the kids up for a surfing lesson. They come to you and you get to watch the fun. The day trip is a must and also think about a visit to Jockey Ridge right next door to you.

I'm sorry to say this. But they will be bored. We've gone three times now and your kids are our kids ages. Not much to do. Hope your house has a pool and pooltable. My suggestions is go to the Y for entertainment. Or as others have suggest the Laser center opening up. But we all have that stuff at home. Like my kids say BORING! Good luck.

We stay in Kitty Hawk 5 or 6 times a year and are never board. During the warm weather the kids are in the ocean all day. I would definitely plan a trip to Ocracoke mid week then maybe go up north one day a take a wild horse tour. Lots of stuff to do! Kitty Hawk is the first town you come to if traveling 158 so that puts you in the middle of everything. The kids might enjoy jetskiing as well. You can rent them through Kitty Hawk kites.
