Now that The Wharf is gone, are there any delicious seafood buffets anywhere?

There never has been a delicious buffet anywhere. Buffets are mediocre at best.

Exactly what is the displeasure with buffets? I have dined at some very fine restaurants, even in NYC, and I find that buffets can be excellent - it is all about having a diverse lifestyle and taking part in all the culture that is offered.

Making the statement "there never has been a delicious buffet anywhere - buffets are mediocre at best" is a bit off hand - you know nothing of another person's tastes. I have dined at the finest restaurants and I see nothing wrong with a great buffet.

After having been to the OBX a week ago and having visited the "local finest restaurants" and a "seafood buffet", the buffet wins out - sorry. but I think I do see why the locals "hate" the buffets so much......there are lines and 2 hour waits for the buffets - the "great local places" - no lines and not a long wait at all, the places we went, we were seated immediately, the buffet a 2 hour wait....the best food - the buffet. All in our party agreed the best quality, taste, variety, and value was at the buffet. So all you who are putting down buffets, I think you are the ones missing out or you are a business owner losing business to a buffet.

I have tried all buffet's in OBX and have yet to find a good one. If you are ever in Ocean City MD. Hoopers had the best all you can eat I have ever been to. You dont help yourself, they keep dropping food on your table. And it is excellent. The only good food we had in OBX was Mama Kwans. Also, I believe its called Jugaroo Coffee house on the Manteo Causeway is excellent. The people who work there are hilarious and your will have a great time having a coffee drink or beer.

To me a real Seafood Beffet dosn't mean everything is deep fried. Which is what you find everywhere. Pay more or buy quality and bring it home and avoid the crowds.

Jimmys seafood buffet is wonderful. Arrive early or be prepared to wait in a long line.

BTW...The Wharf was aweful & Georges Juction made Pondersa look good. It had disgusting food and the service was a disgrace to the obx. I'm happy both went under. They were a hugh waste of hard earned money.

DEFINATELY NOT JIMMY'S!!! I will NEVER go there again. We were treated so rudely! They do NOT have arrangements for people with special needs. I will tell 10 people and those 10 people will each tell 10 people and so on and so forth. so, if you want to be treated incredibly rude, sit in filth, pay an arm and a leg, and have the eyes of the employees rolled at you, by all means go to JIMMY"S SEAFOOD BUFFET located at mile marker 3.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh. I totally agree with the fact that Jimmy's was aweful. All the food was desperately overcooked, and I mean bad! The staff was totally rude, actually pushing by customers without so much as an acknowledgement. I mean, really. It was cafeteria like dining conditions, there are no accommodations for baby changing, which in my case, led to a horrible accident walking through their parking lot when I was carrying my infant daughter, (whose diaper may as well have exploded in a little incident she had, ha ha ha), I stepped into a HUGE pothole, twisted my ankle, and fell to my left knee full weight, while carrying my poor poopy daughter. She was startled, I was bloody, and the remaining 5 days of my 7 day vacation was drastically altered by my pain and my wound. I am contacting them about the experience. But honestly, had none of that occurred, I would still tell you than in my OPINION, my PERSONAL experience there was very shabby. I will not go there for dinner again, and it is poorly overpriced for the mucky conditions, including the highchair with the tattered safety buckle. It was just doomed from the start.
As for other buffets? I have no idea, sorry.

Jimmy's was absolutely terrible, felt like a sardine they way they packed people in there. They couldn't keep up with the demand of the food, which was not that great either.
Carolinas was absolutely terrible as well. We were right under a pipe which dripped water right into our food. The manager wouldn't come to the table to speak with us, but instead sent someone to wipe down the pipe. Wouldn't discount the food (not off the buffet either) that had water dripped into it.
I really miss The Wharf and wish there was another restaurant like it.

We went to Jimmy's last year. Yes it was crowded and the atmosphere a bit racous but the food was good, the choices were almost endless, and they had a great seperate buffet for children with things that kids will really eat--hot dogs, pizza, fish sticks, mac n cheese, etc. Going again next week!

LOVE IT!!!

We go there the day we arrive in OBX and the day before we leave. Endless choices. They do pack you in there like sardines but that's what happens when you go to a popular restaurant.

As far a the parking lot, just like anywhere else, watch where you step and you won't fall down. :)

The restaurant is very dirty. The wait staff doesn't clean the tables/floors before they sit the next party. The restuarant is beyond fire code capacity, thus making it extremely hot. Walking to and from the buffet line, you have to go in and out of several tables. Manager James is very fake, and does not want to satisfy his customers, all he wants is your wallet. Very dissatisfied with service and food quality which is over priced. DO NOT GO THERE!!!

Jimmy's was the WORST experience ever! The food was horrible. Nothing was edible except the crab legs that were gone the entire time (I got one claw and that was it). We could not even stand up from our table because the tables are so close together that the other customers chairs touch yours. Hence, we could not walk up to the buffet to get food. My husband and I both got macaroni and cheese and that was it. It was the only thing that appeared to be edible. Our bill for this was over $80 for just the two of us (and we had no alcohol, only soda. All toilets in the bathrooms (men's and women's) were clogged and the bathrooms smelled horrible. We could smell them from across the restaurant. The place should have been shut down. When we complained about such a horrible experience and no food fit to eat, the management basically told us to F*** off. Stay away from Jimmy's!!! The only ones on here giving good reviews have to be Russian friends of the staff. No actual patron would EVER give this place even a remotely good review.

Jimmy's is NASTY! I agree with others who said it is hot - and I mean sweltering hot, crammed full with a bunch of 300lb. people going through this buffet line which was half of the time out of many of the things we wanted. The things we did manage to get were overcooked. Totally gross. Horrible dining atmosphere and DIRTY. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. For 7 adults with tax and gratuity it was $263! I about died - I would have rather eaten at McD's. Seriously. That place needs to be shut down.

My family ate at Jimmy's last summer, I did not like it. But some of my family did. It was hard to take my small child in such a crowded environment. Also, there are tables right beside the bathroom doors..Yuck...I felt sorry for those diners. I just really felt dirty. Diners rushing up to the buffet nearly knocked you over. Our table constantly got bumped. And boy, was it hot in there. I felt as if I needed a shower when we left.

Jimmy's is over priced, over crowded, poor quality of food and dirty. This is tandem with being noisy and not being worth the wait means stay away at all cost.

This was one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. They told us it would be a 1 hr wait and 2 1/2 hours later, I started telling the people in the parking lot to leave and miraculously they got us in. They seat large parties first. It was disgustingly dirty, food all over the floor and you can't move as they shove you all in like sardines to make more money. Best of all, when trying to find a manager to discuss situation, no one was conveniently available. Didn't offer us a dime off of our bill. Don't Do It!!!

We are Outer Banks locals and we took some out of town guests to Jimmy's one evening for dinner. WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!! My husband got food poisoning and was so sick the next day he could barely hold his head up. We should have known, when we made our way to our table, and our feet stuck to the floor as we walked. Kids at the buffet had their hands in all the food. The place was overcrowded and noisey. There's only one word to describe it.....NASTY!!!

We went to Carolina Seafood ( MP9.5) in Kitty Hawk. Waited 45 minutes for carryout and the order was not right when we returned home. The food was terrible. The french fries went straight to the trash. They could care less we had two young children and teh wait did not make sense since it is off=season and there was only one other carry-out customer. The place seemed dirty. Never again!

JIMMY'S OPENED ITS DOORS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE LATE 90'S. THEY HAD EXPERIENCED AND CREATIVE WORKERS WHO KEPT UP AN EXCELLENT BREAKFAST BUFFET AND DINNER BUFFET. THE MANAGER CLOSED TOO EARLY SO, THE GOOD KITCHEN STAFF LEFT. JIMMY'S HAS NOT BEEN THE SAME SINCE.

Love Jimmy's!!!!!

Yes it is crowded, but it is worth it. It is busy and there can be some food on the floor but it is swept up between guests. I consider $30 a person to be reasonable since you have a choice of 4 types of crab legs, scallops, oysters, shrimp and cheesecake for dessert.

If you are looking for "atmosphere" then you snobs can STAY HOME!

Jimmy's Buffet is great!! I will start by saying that if you are trying to go have a nice, quiet, private dinner, don't go there or you will end up bitter like all the other pretentious a-holes that have posted. It is loud, noisy, crowded, and WORTH IT. The whole environment is so much fun. You usually meet great people while you're waiting & while you're dining. The servers are great & genuinely love talking to people. This year they had a guy playing guitar on the upper deck while you waited for your table, & put put & cornhole out back. The whole experience is always fun! The only negative is that Dot is not still there making her keylime pie.

After going to OBX for many years, I had always wanted to try one of the seafood buffets, Jimmy's looked very alluring with it's huge color ad featuring deliciously presented seafood! What a disappointment. For our $60 me and my friend were stuck way in a corner, far from the buffet. The buffet area is way too small. The food was so poorly prepared...overseasoned, overcooked or just plain spoiled mussels and shrimp. I will never go there again. Maybe the owners should actually read these comments!

If you care about well prepared food, this place is a joke. Every dish on the buffett except the steamed crab legs was awful. I tried several times, but could not get a helping of crabs legs that were hot. The place is filthy, with broken chairs, really nasty carpet, and bent flatware. Obviously, another OBX establishment that knows tourists will spend their money regardless of how low the standards are. To those who say they like being in a dirty, crowded place and paying way too much for sub-standard food, I simply don't know what to say. I am not a food snob, I like all kinds of cuisine, but Jimmy's, I gurantee, could never survive if it were located in another town where tourist money doesn't flow regarless of poor conditions and poor food quality.

Only go to Jimmy's seafood buffet if you love crab legs and need nothing else. I always try to be critical and fully honest in my reviews. The turkey and fish were dried out. The steak looked worse than the hamburger which looked bad. Nothing was freshly carved (ad specified a carving station) and the non-seafood meat that was there was dried out worse than an early TV dinner. The pizza looked and tasted like elementry school cafeteria pizza. The salid bar consisted of iceberg lettuce (not fresh) and very little else. Overall the non-crab leg entrees on the buffet were of very poor cafeteria standards all for the price of a dinner at Ruth Chris's Steak House if you do not order alcohol. I would not recommend for anyone who did not want to eat large quantities of crab legs. Crab legs were plentyful and there were many varieties. They looked and tasted well. The butter available for dipping was of poor quality.

We went to Jimmy's Seafood Buffet this year after trying Carolina Seafood last year. Jimmy's Seafood was outstanding. Food was hot, fresh and tasty. Their were a few bads, but the goods far outweighed the bads. What also was great was the fact they hadlive entertainment, games- putt putt and cornhole, plus pony rides for the kids, which was just awesome for the kids! That was a big bonus and made the wait well worth it and not seem so long! Carolina Seafood is equally as good, but with the entertainment, pony rides and games at Jimmy's, it made it a whole lot more enjoyable. These were also free, so you got more for your money as well. Just my two cents...

Ok, so being amazed by the vast amount of bad reviews for one or both of these buffets is kind of disorienting. My boyfriend and I are taking a trip to the OB in less than a week and he's excited to have some seafood. We have looked at Jimmy's and of course their menu looks plentiful. I think if your looking for that perfect quality, spend the same amount of money and go elsewhere. Calabash in Myrtle Beach seems to have the same appeal and I was thrilled with them. It seems like all those that had bad reviews read other reviews and went there with the impression that it was going to be a terrible experience and actaully let it be a terrible experience. I dont know, I'm just trying to find a good place for me and him to eat and get our money's worth. Please post some good reviews people.

Based on the experience we had, it's no wonder they don't even reply....
My family and I were on vacation on Ocracoke Island and hear that there was a new restaurant, so we decided to try it. We stopped in for an early dinner on Thursday July 23rd. After being seated, we attempted to order iced tea and Lemonade. The waitress told us that "we are out of both". So My wife and sons settled for water. We were craving Seafood and were anxiously looking forward to a great dinner buffet. We were at the Restaurant at around 3:45, and there were 6-7 tables already seated. We made our first trip to the buffet and noticed that some of the items were quite cold. Maybe it just needed fresher items from the kitchen, so we ate the cold items, and returned, hoping the next batch of crab, clams, etc, etc, would be hot. No such luck....we pointed it out to the waitress, who just apologized.

I overheard another waitress tell a different table that there was a power issue that is why the drink machine was not working. Was that the reason the buffet was also not hot and working?.....Based on your marketing for an early dinner crowd, we were enticed by the "Free Lobster Tail" if seated by 4:00,... we were,.... and when the waitress brought them to us, the first 2 were cold, no big shock, and after attempting to pry / tear / scrape the lobster out of the shell, it was a fruitless effort. They were sent back and a replacement was returned to us, in he same overcooked condition, but this time they were hot and overcooked, and unable to be eaten. The waitress once again apologized, but nothing more.

Needless to say, we were / are quite disappointed in the quality of the items at your new location. We vacation on Ocracoke every year and plan on many more years to come, and if this is the quality of the food / service at your newest location, we will surely stay away. With a total dinner bill of over $110.00, I would expect at least some warm food. I would certainly appreciate your comments and reply as soon as possible.

Disappointed in Jimmy's of Ocracoke..

I'd say don't go there unless you love crab legs. They have a great variety of crab legs and a few other crustacians but everything else was for the most part substandard, ESPECIALLY the non seafood stuff. My wife is alergic to shellfish so she went there for me and she didn't enjoy her meal at all,....My daughter was a little happier than the wife since she could eat some crab legs with me. Um,...probably wouldn't make the wife suffer again and go back even though I really enjoyed it

This place is a joke, all the food was dried out, the dinner rolls were so hard you could break a tooth. My kids wanted to leave almost immediately and they were hungry. We asked the waiter if he was bringing out fresh food and he came back with a bowl of shrimp scampi for my son and that was swimming in butter with no taste. They reduced my meal to the teenage buffet price but offered no other discounts and my family did not come close to eating 20.00 dollars worth of food much less the 135.00 bill we had to pay!! I will never eat there again!! I felt really bad for husband who wanted us to have a nice dinner.

When we were there in June we ate at Captian Georges. It was excellent. I don't think we will ever go anywhere else for our seafood buffet. The service was outstanding as well. We are coming back down in August and that is our first place to hit. They have the biggest buffet we have seen and definetly the best seafood we have had there in ten years in going!

Nothing beats the WHARF of any where I've eaten. So sad that the owner became ill and died. The OBX lost a great seafood buffet. As for Jimmies I wouldn't waste my time or money again for that crap.

Are all you people who are on here complaining about Jimmy's, completely nuts?!? I cant believe the my eyes. We had a party of 6 and all of us absolutely thought it was delicious. Only my brother in law had one complaint--said one of his pieces of fish was cold, but still enjoyed everything else. and let me tell you, their is a ton of other items on the buffet. I got on the internet specifically to write a review for jimmys seafood after all of us were so impressed. I do see a theme with a lot of the bad comments. Looks like the complainers are gravitating to this site. A lot of them mention "manager" and "didn't discount our bill" type talk. So I would guess they are the type of people you can never satisfy, and when they don't here what they want from the manager the come onto the internet to write bad reviews. The place IS packed. Why might that be? Bad food? I don't think so. The FREE entertainment, games and pony rides are a great bonus as well. You people who are complaining just because its your nature to complain, are really unbeleviable.

Hesitantly came back to Carolina Seafood this year and was pleased that the new management really CARES. We felt at home walking in the door. The food was the best buffet I have eaten. Fresh local crabs, shrimp, tuna, mahi all outstanding. The best she crab soup ever. Great experience will be back.

Went to Carolina Seafood after experiencing a rude Host, an even ruder Manager and the food was tolerable at least. Went back to new managers with such a warm welcoming entrance. Food was GREAT,staff the best (friendliest) A MUST TRY PLACE!!!!! What FUN!!

We love buffets, and went to 2 while staying in Kitty Hawk this past summer. We went to Captain Georges our first week there, and tried Jimmys our second week. Georges had good food, and a really nice place. Jimmys was crowded, but excellent food and great atmosphere. I agree with one of the earlier posters about how nice the pony rides and games were. Really did make it a more enjoyable overall experience. I just wish the restaurant was bigger.

The Wharf & Seafare were both torn down 7-8 years ago and replaced by "big" houses!!!!

Understanding that individual experiences are a snapshot in time with many variables from visit to visit, what may have been great on a previous visit may be a nightmare on the next visit. Pre-prepared seafood that is served cold with an odor usually is not very good. This was my experience recently at Carolina Seafood. Very little I tried was worthy of a second bite. We left in shock of how bad this really was. I will never return there. And yes, I remember the Wharf and have eaten excellent seafood there years ago. Your experience will depend on primarily 3 things, fresh fare competently prepared and served hot. This is always a gamble and we lost this time. Good luck folks.

Customer service at this place prevents us from getting carryout everytime. For 20 minutes straight we were "disconnected" each time we tried to order. It happened last year too. I guess they can't handle the phones. This place sucks and we've never (and will never) even eaten there.

Decided to try Captain George's (at Outer Banks, NC) tonight for first time. It will be our last time there. No oysters!! Couldn't believe it. Other items were pretty good, but Jimmy's Seafood Buffet up the road has them beat all to pieces. No question! Tons of selections and the food is Great!! Ate there 2 nights ago and wish now we had gone back there, but like they say, "Live and Learn!"

We ate at Jimmy's and will never do it again! My husband and nephew had the regular buffet and I had the Lobster buffet(extra cost) Lobster was over cooked and no flavor what so ever the staff kept looking over at our table after I gave my husband a bite of my lobster. I was then told "you can not do that, he did not pay for the lobster" How rude! I mean it was 1 bite as he did not like it either...Place was very dirty and smelly....we go to Outer Banks several times a year but Jimmy's has never gotten another penny of our money!!
