Subject: Kitty Hawk or Duck
I am visiting for the 2nd time this summer and renting a house for the family. Can anyone give any feedback about KH vs. Duck? The house i am looking at in KH is just off 158... is that a busy road and can i walk to the beach?? The house in Duck is soundside. ANY INPUT? thanks in advance!

Kitty Hawk and Duck have many things alike and many differences. You will find the homes in Duck are more expensive, on average, than most in Kitty Hawk. Are you renting on the east side of the bypass (aka 158)? Duck road is a two lane road with a 25mph speed limit in Duck while the bypass is a 5 lane highway with 50-60mph cars and trucks, and crossing it by foot is a difficult process even in the off season. Duck road, in season, is jammed up pretty well and so it takes you an extra 20-40 min to get to your rental, but that is mainly just on the turnover days of Saturday and Sunday.

Let me know if I can answer your questions more in detail.

Tim

Depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. Kitty Hawk area has all the attractions and stores, etc, and is a pretty busy place. 158 is the big 4-lane bypass, Rt. 12 is the little 2-late road right by the beach. If you're on the beach side of 158, shouldn't be too bad.

I've never actually stayed in the Duck area, but have been there several times, and personally didn't like it, though I know some people really do. There are tons and tons and tons of huge beach houses...everywhere! Didn't seem to be much in the way of shopping or attractions, things to do, etc. The few shops I did see seemed to be upscale expensive sorts of things. My wife stayed up that way somewhere before we got married a few years ago with her family, and I know she spent an evening walking to try to walk to the beach and never did find her way there! All depends on where you are though I suppose...maybe someone else can tell of their experiences, but that's mine.

Personally, I'd say go south. Anywhere below the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head area is where I like to be. In general it's a much more laid-back area. Buxton is a nice town, and my family has been camping there about every year for around 20 years...my father and his family camped at the same place when they visited back in the 60's and early 70's. Ocracoke is another nice place, and a slightly different atmosphere yet from the Buxton area...it's an island you can only get to by a ferry. One small village at the end where you can easily travel wherever you want to on bike. My wife & I spent our honeymoon there. It's a town that many people describe as "quaint". Wherever you stay, make a day trip there and you'll see what I mean.

Good luck in your planning, and enjoy your trip!
