Subject: Ocracoke
Was just down to Outerbanks and unfortunatly did not get to do all that we wanted. We went to Ocracoke late in the day and everyone tired and we didn't get to stay long. I feel we missed the "experience" of the island. Others gumbled there were few shops and nothing to see and wouldn't stay. (Think they expected it to be like Manteo). Just wondered what other folks consider the charm of Ocracoke to be? What are your favorite things to do there? Your favorite spot? My husband and I want to spend more time there just ourselves when we go back and want some direction on where to go and what to see there. Thanks!

I agree, Ocracoke is a little over rated. It's good for a day trip, but Manteo is a lot better for walking and shopping.

I love Ocracoke - some of the shops are quite nice. The Island Ragpicker and The Village Craftsman are good places to shop. There are excellent restaurants - The Back Porch is terrific. The North Carolina Dept of Natural Resources used to give informal talks about the history of the island and the pirates. Really, there's plenty to do - you can be as busy or relaxed as you want.

The great thing about Ocracoke is what "isn't" there...not a lot of shops, etc. Ocracoke is made for relaxing. It beholds the most beautiful beaches on the Outer Banks and is great for shell hunting.

Ocracoke is VERY laid back. Not much there to do from a teens point of view but that's ok. A vacation with your kids is about connecting and making memories and the OBX is not soon forgotten. We took our sons last year (to Hatteras Island) and the oldest was worried about being bored, but he was the one most touched by our visit there. We made a campfire on the beach, we fished, flew kites, boogie boarded a little in the surf. The waves slammed my oldest down hard once though and so we mainly swam in the pool as the currents are very dangerous. (Be very cautious as the last entry stated) Also went to Roanoke Island and saw the outdoor drama called The Lost Colony. You also might enjoy going to the Elizabethan Gardens which is right next to where the outdoor drama is so you can see them both if you feel like a little day trip out of Ocracoke. There are a lot of very nice shops in Manteo on Roanoke Island also. We did the shops, the gardens and the play all in one day. It was very enjoyable. If you go to Manteo I reccomend eating at the Full Moon Cafe. Do eat before you head over to the gardens and play because you can not buy anything but candy, popcorn and drinks at The Last Colony location. As for the mosqitoes they can be bad and then other days not. If there is a lot of wind then they will not bother you much at all, if the wind dies down though then look out! You can buy repellant when you get there though if you need it. Have a wonderful trip!
