Subject: Soundside vs Oceanside
Hi all! Our family is looking into houses in the OB for next summer. Mainly Northern areas, such as Corolla, Duck, Nags Head and perhaps Southern Shores. We have children ages 2 1/2-5 and would like opinions on the beaches in those areas.
If you stay soundside, are there 'beach' areas just like what you would get on the oceanside, but calmer waters? And if you stay 'between the highways' does it generally mean you have to get in the car to go to the beach or is walking still an option? Any information and tips would be much appreciated! =)

A couple of comments in regards to your question. Corolla, Duck and Southern Shores are nice areas. Be sure and see the details of the homes as you may have preferences. Soundside in these areas usually means a long walk to the beach because this area can be wide in parts.

The beaches on the sound are very narrow and wouldn't be like the real ocean beaches you are accustomed to. Nags head is OK. The between the highway homes means that you can walk to the beach, but you have to cross beach road(12) which can be busy at times during the summer.

I have dealt with Southern Shores Realty, Sun Realty, and R&R which is now Resortquest. They are all good and have varied homes. Some must eats places are Owens, Duck Deli, Blue Point Grill in Duck, Queen Annes Revenge in Wanchese, and last but not least The Weeping Radish in Manteo.

Our family typically summers in the Corolla area. The soundside allows for spectacular sunset views but is not really an area you'll want to stay for the day. The water tends to be quite shallow and is brownish.

Also, the official bird of the obx, the mosquito, can be bothersome. Despite all this, we do stay on the sound side in a community called The Currituck Club. This community is on a golf course across from the ocean. The houses are all great. There is a walking/bike path throughout the community which is lit and nicely landscaped. There is a community center w/ a pool, baby pool, playground, fitness center, pool table/ping pong, lit tennis courts and lit basketball courts. Once weekly, the community has a "splash bash" for all of the renters which is a catered cook out by the community pool w/ live music. It's a chance to meet other families.

The community has a tram that runs regularly to take you over to the ocean and back. You just put your beach stuff out front of your home and it will stop for you. There is also parking if you want to drive yourself over. It is just a short trip and not really an inconvenience.
We find that we are able to afford so much more house by staying on this side. We always get a home with our own pool as we find it nice to come back after spending a day on the beach to come back and hang out at the pool. Village Realty carries most of the homes in Currituck Club. You can check them out at www.villagerealtyobx.com.
This community is designated by property code CC. You can find out more about Currituck Club at www.thecurrituckclub.com.

Good luck!

We just got back from our first trip to the OBX last nite. We had a wonderful time. Stayed Oceanside in Monteray Shores. Our house was one block from the Food Lion(grocery store) and 2 blocks from the beach but it was an easy walk. We rented the house thru Corolla Classic vacactions. It was great for the kids(ages 2 thru 20) since they would rather go to the beach than go fishing. Soundside is good if you have small kids and they want to fish. I took my son crabbing off the pier at Heritage park and he loved it. My daughter went on the wild horse safari and enjoyed it and we all took the "ghost tour" at the Whalehead Club(very inexpensive and you get a chance to tour the house). Have fun.
