Subject: cars on the 4x4 beach area...
First time to 4x4 area in september. Im a little confused........ If you are to drive right on the beach, wouldnt the vehicles be in the way of the peoples activites ( i.e. sunbathing, playing, etc.)? How close are the cars and how often do they pass by?

Driving on the beaches in Sept is only allowed on the beaches south of Oregon Inlet. They pass pretty close to where other cars are parked because the beach is fairly wide there. After Oct 1 they allow people to drive in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head and they pass close to you! VERY CLOSE and they don't allow dogs in the summer - go figure. Give me the dogs and prohibit the ya-hoos in trucks year round!!!

guess i didnt specify that we are vacationing in the 4x4 area north of Corolla. I understand that drivingon the beach is the ONLY way to get around, so wouldnt you have to drive all year on the beach?

Yes. It's your only option up there.

As in some other messages, we were at Carova Beach earlier this month. We were on the beach almost all day every day. There is some traffic but we hardly even noticed. But one caution is always to look before you walk. You can hardly hear the vehicles. Most vehicles try to stay some distance from people on the beach, but people on the beach also need to stay out of the main path. Again, we LOVED it!

Yes, you have to drive on the beach for everything, the beach is the main "road" in the 4X4 area. When at the beach, you should park in the middle portion of the beach, between the high water mark and the duneline. Please stay off the dunes!

yes sometimes you get in eachothers way. both should be extremely careful although i have seen both being extrely uncareful...by both i mean trucks and beach goers. where you are supposed to park and where people do park are two differnt things. but on a busy day, trucks seem to gather in a line and therefore make travel nessesary to move towards the dunes. i always am nervous a child or dog will run out. the water noise makes it impossiable for a driver to hear any shouts or barks..
