Subject: Avon area with teens
We will be first timers to the OBX in mid-July. After reading through some of the posts on traffic....patience is at the top of the to-bing list. My question is: will the teens 13-17 be happy with activities available in Avon? Can anyone go windsurfing on the sound? Thanks!

I JUST RETURNED FROM MY FIRST OUTER BANKS TRIP. OUR OLDEST SON IS 14. ALTHOUGH WE STAYED IN WAVES (ABOUT 20 MILES FROM AVON) I DO THINK THAT THERE IS PLENTY TO DO. THERE ARE SEVERAL BEACH SHOPS, SURF SHOPS, STRIP CENTERS. IN WAVES THERE IS A SMALL WATER PARK THAT HAS A SLIDE, BUMPER BOATS AND GO CARTS.

WE SAW PLENTY OF PEOPLE WINDSURFING/KITESURFING ON THE SOUND. THEY SEEMED TO CONGREGATE AT ONE LOCATION.

HOPE THE WEATHER TURNS AROUND. IT WAS COOL AND WET DURING MEMORIAL WEEK.

Just south of Avon there is a place called the Haul Over Area it is a wind surfing area good for the whole family there are rentals there in Avon too if you need them , I’m sure you will have a great time . take a look at this site as you said you are new comers.

Traffic might be heavy but not really a big problem . Nothing like a traffic jam on the beltway it keeps moving just a bit heavy on Saturday and Sundays.

We stay in Avon every year now. There are less things for teenagers than in Nags Head, but still some activites, incl. a movie thereater. Get an Insiders Guide to OBX and try
www.obxer.com.
Lots of families post there. Get onto the islands early. We stay in Raleigh the night before and hit the bridge from Manteo on 64 about 10-11am, much less traffic problems. Bring enough food for the night and go to grocery early the next day. Stop at Lisas Pizza on the way down.
