Need some help. Trying to plan our first trip to the OBX with two toddlers any suggestions on were to stay and things I won't think about when finding a rental. So far it has been a little overwhelming looking at the rental sites.

The longer you wait, the less choices you will have. You may be over thinking the whole thing too. Ask your self if crossing a 2 lane road to get to the beach is worth saving a little extra $$. Since you have toddlers you many not care if you have to cross a road since they will not be crossing without you and you can save a good bit by being 1 or 2 lots back from the ocean. South Nags Head is another option because you can be 1 to 4 lots back and not have a road to cross at all.

Planning a time to come might be the biggest worry. If you have a week in June you will find the water pretty chilly most of the month. July is much better, but it is crowded. Aug is even better and Sept is great as long as the nasty hurricanes are not around. Be sure to get trip insurance in Sept.

Don't over think the whole thing too much. Bring enough food, toilet paper, etc for 1 to 2 days and visit the local super market on Monday rather than the weekend along with everyone else.

You can rent high chairs, cribs etc. from one of the rental places around here. Most of the houses are at least 2 levels tall so deck safety will be an issue. The newer houses will have code compliant balcony picket spacing, some older ones don't Most of the houses have sliding glass doors--bring removable stickers to avoid toddlers trying to walk through glass doors.
Suggest you look for a house in the Duck or Corolla areas. Some folks with toddlers like soundfront houses. Currituck sound is very shallow, warmer than the ocean, and pretty calm. I see toddlers in life jackets (rent) and parents playing in the sound all summer on tubes, rafts, kayaks, etc. Plus you have the daily sunsets to enjoy.
Good luck.

Suggest you rent a house on Hatteras Island...check for 3 bedroom homes from Hatteras Realty,
Outer Beaches Realty or Midgett Realty.

I agree with the poster about crossing Rt 12. It would be to long of a walk for little ones and a hassle crossing the road.Especially if you have a handful of beach supplies to cart around. On weekends Rt. 12 can get really congested with traffic. I say your best bet is when you are doing your searches look for oceanfront, semi ocean front or ocean side. Some of the realtors web sites will list how far away beach access is. This is a determining factor when we pick our beach rental. HTH
