I spent way too much time cooking on vacation last year. Let's talk about food! What are everyone's favorite restaurants along the Outer Banks? Where are they? What do they serve? How pricey? Give us all the details.

Tale of the Whale, Manteo Causeway, moderate $, general menu, family friendly

Tortugas Lie, MP 10? Beach Road, moderate to inexpensive, very casual, funky, small and intimate (seats maybe 30). By far my favorite place.

Carolina Seafood, MP 6? Beach Road, very casual, funky, excellent seafood buffet

Jockey's Ribs in Nags Head. Small place, but we get there early and it's not a problem.

Are there any good restaurants that have options other than seafood? What about any good buffets? It doesn't really matter where, as I'm sure we'll cover from Ocracoke to Corolla at some point throughout the week.

Kelly's menu is more varied. Tale of the Whale also has a varied menu (pasta, beef, etc.).

Most buffets focus on seafood. George's Junction used to have the largest selection, but I beleive it's gone now. I'm a vegetarian, so when our family goes to a seafood buffet, I hand over the car keys and drink a few beers and eat appetizers instead.

We tried Mackdaddy's in Avon last fall and really liked it. We also love Owens and save that for our last night out before going home. And we think Goombay's (Beach Road) is fun.

Here is a link to the Outer Banks Restaurant Guide. Lots of restaurants are listed. You can order a hard copy or pick one up when you get here. If you click on "view our ad" under a restaurant you will see their actual ad from the guide.
Disclaimer: the guide is a pay to participate deal (nothing wrong with that). There are a number of restaurants that didn't participate that I consider to be excellent, and others that do participate I don't consider all that great. I post this every year and for some reason the disclamer makes some folks mad.
I just know that when we used to visit, we liked looking at all the ads.

We've always had good food at Chilli Pepper's, and Tortuga's Lie seconded, for sure. Also, Rundown Cafe is inexpensive and good. We always sit at the bar so we don't really know how table service is (they all seem to run well though).

I've been vacationing and living in KDH for 40 years. The best resturants are Sam & Omies, the Collington Cafe, and The Black Pelican is improving. DO NOT buy seafood at Billy's (Collington Island) -- inconsistent and at times INEDIBLE (Billy doesn't seem to care either). Get your seafood at Austins in Nags Head or go to the commercial fishing village of Wanchese for the real thing.

On the Roanoke island site, I kept seeing information that would say bring a picnic lunch or buy a picnic lunch. Does the Full moon cafe sell picnic lunches? If so, what are those like and the cost?

Three places that we've gone for year...
Owen's is the best restaurant on the Outer Banks. Higher end but some of the best food we've ever had.
Jimmy's in Kitty Hawk. Best seafood buffet. Food is good and plentiful, prices very reasonable.
And my kid's favorite is Captain George's. They serve foot long hots, chili cheese fries and bbq.

Do not go to most of the restaurants mentioned here, unless your idea of a fine restaurant is Outback! Owens is disgusting and overpriced. The absolute best in OBX is Blue Point Grill in Duck. You must reserve one month in advance. 1587 which used to be their sister restaurant is very good also. If you want good home cooking go to Pots on in The Kitchen over the bridge on the mainland. Jimmy's Buffet is good for the crablegs and that is it.
Please do not go to Owen's. It is caught in a toiurist timewarp!
Checkout Blue Points website,
www.goodfoodgoodwine.com
I repeat do not go to Owens!

My favorite is the Corolla Brew Pub in Corolla. They are a little hard to find because they are in the courtyard of Food Lion shopping center at Monteray Plaza. The food is great and they have a hugh selection of draft and bottled beers. The kids love it too. It's well worth the trip. If you haven't been there you are missing out on a great place to eat.

I would suggest The Outerbanks Brewing Station". It has a bar but, it is kid friendly. It can be a little loud. But with kids it kinda drowns out the noise. They have good food and a kids menu. You should try it...ENJOY!!!!!!!!

They have great Pizza and the BEST
buffalo wings since I left Buffalo.
Hand cut fries and daily specials.
A must try. Also, some of the best seafood I've had, has come from Captain Billy's on Collington Island. We always spend an afternoon eating steamed oysters at Awful Arthur's. Great food, Great fun.

We've been going to OBX for 18 years. Our favorite restaurant is Collington Cafe. We used to eat fantastic hardshell crabs at a place near the water right before the Wright Mem. Bridge called Greentails. Sadly, it was for sale last year. Does anyone know of a place other than Dirty Dicks for hardshells?

Just got back from the OBX and the places we went to were:

Diamond Shoals in Buxton- slow pace even though they were not ever busy, but worth it. GREAT food. Everything we tried. We came here twice.

Sand Bar & Grille near Frisco - pricey and limited menu, but pretty good. Awesome view, right on the sound.

Cafe 12 in Avon - Great little joint. Emphasis on little. Maybe 20 people can fit in there, but their flats and wraps are amazing. Great lunch place.

Dolphin Den in Avon - pricey, average seafood. Not bad, just not great. Always a lot of people there, so prepare to wait before you eat your average food.

Full Moon Cafe in Manteo - Another tiny place tucked away in the quaint little waterfront area. Expensive, with a limited menu. Shrimp and Crab enchilada was amazing, everything else we ordered was just average. Not kid friendly, even though they have a small kids menu. They wanted $5 for Kraft macaroni and cheese!

Has anyone been to Captain George's in Kill Devil Hills? Kinda pricey and wonder if it's worth the money. This is our first time to OBX and we want to do it right (without breaking the bank every night).

We stayed in Rodanthe the week of 8/14 -- here are a few of the places we ate:

Flying Fish in Kill Devil Hills - Food was okay, but you didn't get much for the price. Some in our party had a hard time finding something to eat because the menu was a little gourmet. We prolly won't go here again.

The Mad Crabber in Avon -- EXCELLENT!! We ALL loved it -- the atmosphere was fun and the food was GREAT! The prices weren't too bad either.

Capt. George's in KDH - The food was plenty and was good. We didn't have too wait very long at all and we had a big party. The place is very busy and loud, but we would try again for sure! There was something for every appetite.

The Froggy Dog in Avon - This was a great place to take kids. They have a play area to occupy them while they wait for their meal, which wasn't too long. The food was very good!

Any place you think we should try next year?????

Jimmy's Seafood Buffet is our favorite for sure! We eat there at least 2 or 3 times during a week stay. The best crablegs ever!! Another favorite is Duck Donuts...located in Kill Devel Hills and in Duck. Made fresh while you watch and served warm...covered in your pick of toppings...if you like cake donuts...you will LOVE these!

The SandBar was good and open late the night we came into town, excellent onion rings!

Burger Burger was good for lunch, club turkey sandwich rocks!

Howards Pub on Ogracoke has a great taco salad, otherwise food was bland.

My hubby's fav was Dirty Dick's for seafood, got that 2 1/2 foot seafood boat and he went nuts! He said the shrimp at SandBar was just as good.

Pizza? Definately go to Nino's on 12. Large w/pepperoni was $13, traditional circle pizza and thin crust! Finally, someone that can make a pizza!
