Subject: Outer Banks With Teenagers
We are looking to visit the OB this summer with our teens ages 18, 16 and 13.

I am looking for recommendations from parents who have been to the OB with their teens.

Where did you stay? What else did you do besides the beach?
Did your teens enjoy the location?

Many thanks for your help.

Mine love Corolla Light Resort because of all the planned activities for teens, as well as for small kids, etc. There is also a fabulous pool complex and sports center. Plus easy access to restaurants and other things, like derby car racing at Timbuk II and jet skiing, etc.

This last summer we stayed at a place someone recommended to us on this board and really loved it. So I will continue the good deed and pass it onto you :)

(We are renting there again this year)

Your kids are in the "we want to be anywhere but where our parents are". Those teens will never have a good time here, but they will make do as long as they have places that they can go hang out where "you" can't see them. Don't worry too much, you won't find much to make them happy. I would stay somewhere where there are lots to do. Nags Head, KDH, Corolla, Kitty Hawk, Avon in that order would be best for you.

My teens did well in Duck. They could walk to the little shops and loved going to Wings. Of course it's close to the beach too ( we wernt oceanfront) so they got plenty of teen time. The best thing we did was to rent a house with a large game room. They brought video games, watched rented movies & ( MTV), played pool & foosball, and hung at the pool and listened to their music on the outdoor stereo system. They loved the vacation and want to go back, so I dont think you will have a major problem with your teens. Oh, and we let them each bring a friend so that made it more fun for them. It was so nice to be together as a family. Just let them know if they drive anywhere that the police are EVERYWHERE and they do enforce the speed limit. Above all, I felt good about letting them venture out in Duck. Im not sure I'd feel that same way in Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills. It will be fine and you all will have a blast.

geez..i really disagree with a lot of the responses as a teenager. duck and corolla, please, those areas are so boring unless you want to shop. kdh, nags head has a lot more to do. the pit has a teen night 3 days a week. theres a ton of putt putt places around, gocarts. i dunno thats just me, i want to hang out on the beach all day then go chill wherever

I quess it all depends on how close of a family you are and how easily you are entertained. we are just thrilled to be on vacation together and dont need away time. I have 2 teenage boys 13 and 16 they each bring a friend, we stay at duck few houses back from the ocean. They love the beach and pool also walking to duck for pizza shopping and water sports. At night we all sit around and play games , cards chess checker video games. The one year we had a pool table. That was great. Each of my guys and their freinds said they had a ball and hope we could do it next year. We are going again this year to duck with the same friends. Good luck and have a great time.

Have been going to the Outer Banks for years. Kids are now 13 & 15. We stay at the below home and there is much for all ages to do.
Everything within walking distance: pool, beach, shopping, go karts, boating, movies. They seem to enjoy their freedom to walk to whatever they want!

Hope this helps!

I agree with #s 9853 and 9845 for the reasons stated plus the trolley service. There is shopping nearby and really no need to go far for anything.

We took our daughter there for the first time when she was 16 and she can't wait to take her boyfriend with us this summer, they are 21 now. Loved climbing the lighthouses, going crabbing, enjoyed the dolphin tours and seeing dolphins up close even though we usually see them from our house we rent, loves going to Cape hattaras national seashore etc

Glad to see that other crazy post was deleted. Don't let things like that scare you. No matter what area you go, the teens are gonna love it. Remember being a teenager? We could make the best out of any situation and have fun no matter where we were. So enjoy being with your family. They grow up and go off on their own soon enough and its times like this that youll all remember. (as seen in post 9943) Have a great time.

As a 21-year-old who has been going to the outer banks at least once a year since I was about 12, I highly recommend taking your teens along. We usually stay in Avon, which is a beautiful quiet area though regrettably is fairly boring. If you are a first time vacationer take your teens to the lighthouses, and spend a day trip on Ocracoke Island. It has been my experience that because the Outer Banks is so family oriented that it is safer for children.

Depending on which end of the teenage spectrum your children fall, and how mature they are there are plenty of things to do in the evening weather alone or with their parents. Depending on where you stay you can build small fires on the beach at night and there is almost always miniature golf nearby. I have a sister that is five years older and we were always allowed to bring a friend, which was wonderful. From a cost aspect an extra person only really costs as much as your dining out costs will be.

We've been visiting the Outerbanks since our kids were about 3 and 5 years old. They are now 16 and 18. Each year we ask where they would like to vacation and it is always "The Outer Banks!!" Our friends who also have two teens have been coming along for the past 10years. They are now 20 and 17 and love it too! We always stay in South Nags Head as it is uncrowded and very beautiful yet within reach of all activities. They love to go to Jockey's Ridge State Park dunes in the evening and to visit the Kitty Hawk Kites complex across the street. They could spend one whole evening visiting suvenier/beach shops. Take flashlights and buckets. They still get a kick out of catching and releasing ghost crabs on the beach after dark. Take the drive southward to climb the Hatteras Light House and go just a bit farther and take the free car ferry over to Ocracoke Island. They have the best burgers at the Jolly Rodger right on the docks. Favorite restaraunts are Awful Arthurs Oyster Bar, Black Pelican and Hurricaine Mo's at Pirates Cove. Oh, and be sure to take them to the Oregon Inlet fishing center around 4 or so in the afternoon when the fishermen display their catches of the day. Have a great time!

i am 19 and have been going to the outer banks since i was probably 10...

I love it there because it is such a family fun place. its a safe environment where, as a parent, you need not worry about your teens taking a walk on the beach at night or going out the movies alone. its not the kind of place where you will see bars open till four am or clubs with people waiting in line, its not like there at all.

my family stays in duck. there is some really neat shopping in scarborough fair in duck as well as up in timbuck II in corolla (the two out door, deck covered mini strip malls are rather similar).

here are some insider fun things we have come to love every year:

-buy a kite from kitty hawk kites, preferably the stunt kites and take them on the beach in the evening or to jockey's ridge sand dunes. its practially a sport flying those kites! you can do all these neat tricks, and if its really windy they give you bit of pull which is cool

-if you guys like fishing, at night the bay is nice, or even go to the ocean

-Mini Golf! almost any where is sure to be a blast

-if you have a four wheel drive vehicle, take it up to the 4 wheel drive beach.. you may think why would i drive to a beach when i can just walk to the one outside my door.. but, the water and the sand are a little differnt up there, its usually less crowded and its fun driving on the bumpy sand

-Go rent waverunners.. its expensive so dont do it if you are on a budget, but its a lot of fun if you get to do it

-most neighboorhoods in duck come with community pools and tennis courts, so bring your rackets if you stay there!

-go see a movie at night sometime

-Visit the dunes at sunset on jockey's ridge state park

-rent bicycles from one of the many rental places. there is a sidewalk in duck that is very peaceful and once you get to sanderling, there are trails that run through the woods

:) hope this helps and hope you enjoy your vacation! i can't wait to leave on mine!
