Subject: New to the Outer Banks
My husband and I are looking for a pet friendly area on the outer banks that is relatively close to shopping, restaurants, and other convienences. We don't necessarily want to be in the hustle and bustle. We wouldn't mind having to drive to restaurants, etc. We are looking for a vacation to get away from the daily grind! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Salvo, Waves and the 4x4 areas as well as Ocracoke are places you should look into.

check cyberrentals.com for some great homes in the Corolla area! Ocean Sands is very reasonable and most homes are newer.

9722, Corolla is not what someone wants when they say they don't want to be in the hustle and bustle. Corolla IS the hustle and bustle along with Duck to Nags Head and Avon to Hatteras. That leaves South Nags Head to Avon and Ocracoke.

9727, Hustle and bustle is different things to different people. To me, as a resident of the DC suburbs, Corolla is not hustle and bustle. To someone who lives out in the country, Corolla may be the hustle and bustle. Original poster, can you describe your ideal week and then we'll try to help a little better.

As a child/teenager my family and I always vacationed at the NJ shore and then onto Ocean City, MD. Ocean City is very busy - lots of high rise hotels and condo properties, a lot of traffic, etc. This is what we don't want to deal with (which is why so many people have recommended OBX to us). We have heard wonderful things about OBX which is why we are looking to drive about 10 plus hours for vacation this year! We have heard the beaches don't get as crowded as the beaches up in northern states. Since we will be driving such a distance and have not been there, we are looking for some advice as to where to stay. We would like to be close enough to conveniences while being in a nice quaint area. We don't have children so being close to child attractions is not important. Readin information on the different realtor websites has gotten me a bit confused. Thanks again for giving us any advice for us first timers!

everyone keeps talking about corolla, but its honestly not one of my favorite places. if you are looking for something drastically different from the high rise condos ect. i would suggest somewhere in south nags head, or avon. avon is quiant, nothing but a few local restraunts and small shops around, and a grocery store

If your main attraction is fishing, head far south. If you want the Hatteras Lighthouse, not too many people, head a bit south for that area. If you like to be near lots of restaurants, Jockey's Ridge, Wright Memorial and still be close to chain restaurants and shopping, stay in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head. If you are looking for a resort hotel head to Duck for the Sanderling Inn. If you want nice boutique-style shopping, some nice restaurants, a lighthouse and a museum, try Corolla or Duck.

It would depend on what your interests are. You have gotten some good information. If fishin is your thing then look at Avon South. If you want to see wild horses (4 wheel drive or tours) then Northern beaches is what you are looking for. My suggestion would be to select a nice home to rent, North or South or in between you will enjoy the beach

Close to shopping and restaurants means generally staying in the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head area. If you are looking to avoid New Jersey level hustle and bustle, you will be very happy with this area.

I also was used to the Jersey shore for vacation and was astounded and entranced by the difference of the Outer Banks.

You can try other areas, but you are giving up some convenience to get a little more isolated. For your first time, KH-NH should be fine.

I would recommend Duck. There is plenty to do or not do, your choice. Besides being a great little town, it is a good central location for first timers--about 8 miles north of Kitty Hawk and about 12 miles south of Corolla. You can check those areas out at your leisure to see whether you misht want to try them next time.
Wherever you choose, have a great time.

My vote is for Ocracoke the most laid back place down there.

The heart of duck is where we stay. Duck landing is the road we are on this year. You can walk to the stores , pizza places. There are less people the first and second week in june, rental prices are lower too. We have been going the last 5 years at that time and the weather is nice. September also is a good time to go . Where ever you decide it will be great you just cant go wrong at the outer banks. Enjoy

We stay in South Nags Head every year, and love it there. You can drive a couple miles north to groceries, shopping, etc or a couple miles south to miles and miles of completely empty beaches (pea island area). Absolutely relaxing. And pets are not a problem. Enjoy!!

As someone who, as a child, vacationed every summer in Ocean City, MD, I can certainly appreciate the original poster's concerns about overcrowding, hustle and bustle.

The bottom line is that Ocean City is VERY densely developed (all high rises from 90th street up to 120th). Comparatively, Outer Banks is NOT very densely developed. That said, some areas of OBX are more built-up than others, but you will not find any buildings taller than say 6 stories. OBX is mostly single family detached houses, not many condos.

Our family has now stayed in Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and South Nags Head. SNH by far is the least developed, and here's why: Between MP 16 and 20 (approx), most of the developed land is only a few houses deep from the ocean. The beaches are much less crowded, if you're not ocean front, you're only sharing the public access with a few dozen houses at most By contrast, in Duck, you might be sharing a public beach access with nearly a hundred other houses.

SNH is close to restaurants, shops, etc. We love it and will never go back to the northern beaches. It's just too crowded up there now.

Oh, and by South Nags Head and the area between mileposts 16 and 20, I mean S. Old Oregon Inlet Road (the beach road south of Whalebone Junction). Go to Google Maps, type in "South Nags Head."

Enjoy your trip, like previous posts have said, no matter where you stay, your first OBX experience will be very special. It's nothing like Ocean City, Fenwick Island, etc. It's a completely different world down there.

i would also reccomend duck. ive been going there for 10 years and it feels like home. it is a quaint little town and the homes are a two minute walk to the beach and the bay area... for pets, you have to find a house that is pet freindly because not all of them are. one neighborhood in particular seems to be very pet friendly, Port Trinite. almost everyone there brings thier dogs plus there is community pool and tennis courts

I have a perfect oceanfront house for you and your pet in Duck. "Seamist" is rented through Sun Realty as 173-A and is pet friendly. Check the photos online by going to www.sunrealtync.com and typing 173-A in the search. It has everything that you want and more.
