Beaches are non existent with a few tiny private beaches the exception.
a public soundside park will open this spring in Duck with docking and boardwalks along the sound. the rest of the soundfront is private, owned by property owners, watersports operators or property owners associations.
Currituck Sound is considered fresh water, although it is brackish with a 2-3 PPT salt content. (the ocean is usually around 30-32 PPT.) It is the only fresh water sound on the outer banks.
Some of the shoreline is bulkheaded, but most is wetlands along the shore.
The sound is shallow, you really have to look to find deeper than about 4 feet, and warm, mostly with a yucky mud bottom. (wear water shoes).
People love to kayak or jet ski or parasail on the sound. Small kids love to play along the shore because it is so shallow and warm.
Many of the soundfront houses have private docks. Soundfront rentals sometimes come with some water toys, or you can rent locally.
The best thing about the sound is the magnificent sunsets.
If you want to jet ski in Duck you have to rent from one of the rental places. You cannot launch your private jetski in Duck, nor can you launch, recover or tie it up at the docks or piers.
