Subject: Visiting Corolla for the first time this summer--W
My family and I have rented a home in the Ocean Sands area of Corolla in August. We have vacationed in the past at Rehobeth Beach, DE and Ocean City, MD. I know there is no boardwalk, etc. But what can we expect? Are the beaches crowded? Is the water rough....I heard riptides are common? Are the alot of restaurants? Chain or local? Any info will be appreciated

It’s like a single home community on the beach, The beaches are less crowded then Rehoboth Beach, DE and Ocean City, MD. The water will change according to the weather so you never know but yes there can be rip tides occasionally . Plenty of places to eat but you will need to go to Kitty Hawk or farther south for chain restaurants. Here is a site you might like to look at as it’s your first time. I’m sure it will be every thing you have ever expected of a beach community .

Beaches are fine there. The ripe tides come and go along with the winds. It is normally not a problem at all. There are a few resturants up there but more in the Kitty Hawk to Nags Head area -- but -- that is about 40 min south of Whalehead. The traffic up that 2 lane road will be the worst part of your vacation. Take a huge "chill-pill".

There are probably 15 or more restaurants in the Corolla area.
Ocean Sands is a very nice area, great beach and friendly visitors with plenty of kids for your kids to play with. The beaches are large and uncrowded. August ocean temps may be in the mid-70s, it depends on the winds. If there are bad rip currents, they will post red flags at the beaches and there will be no swimming.
Ocean Sands is set out in sections, with section A being the farthest south, and maybe section Q being the farthest north. Most of the Corolla shopping is north of Ocean Sands at Tim-Buck II and Monteray Plaza. There is a big 24 hour Food Lion at Monteray, and that's it for now, and it can be jam packed, especially late Saturday afternoons, so shop during off hours if you can.
Duck is six to eight miles south of Ocean Sands and has lots of restaurants and shopping.
Here is last year's menu guide for you: http://www.outerbanksguides.com/restaurant/index.html
Enjoy.

There is a Dockside North (I think it's called) in Monteray Plaza--excellent seafood market.

I have vacationed in the area's you mentioned. The OBX is very spread out & no comparision to OC,MD. Beach homes are typically very private, no noise to deal with like the boardwalk area's in OC. The beaches in the obx are not congested....very family friendly If you have children check out Jockey Ridge sand dunes, NC Aquarium in Manteo, Currituck light house. If you have a suv there is a 4x4 area in Corolla where you can drive your vehicle on the beach. If your lucky you might see the wild horses.

I used to live in Ocean Sands and the beaches were never crowded, not even in peak season. It is a great community.

The north beaches of the Outer Banks are great! Very little congestion, nothing but relaxing. If you have a SUV, definitely try to make it up to the end of the paved road, and come visit Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, and Carova Beach.

we're stuck with not enough room for everyone on the drive down in our SUV, so it's minivan for the trip - BUT we don't want to miss out on 4WheelDrive Beach fun. Are there any local rental spots near Corolla?
