Subject: When to leave

We have a house booked June 2007 on Hatteras Island. We will be leaving to come home on a Saturday. What time should we leave to beat the traffic? Thanks.

If it is early June, you won't have much traffic to worry about. If it is late June then hit the bridge at Kitty Hawk before 1pm and you will avoid most of the jam.

If you have little ones that will sleep, drive at night. Shop before you leave. Remember that checkin is 4:00 and all those renters will be heading your way

Where are you coming from/leaving to? If you can, take the new US64 bridge to bypass Manteo and come in on US64 and head south on US12 to Hatteras. That way you avoid Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.
A good rule of thumb if you hate traffic is to get on and get off the island by 0900.
Depending where your house is on Hatteras, it could take 1.5 hours to get up to the Wright Memorial Bridge at Kitty Hawk.

we pack up the night before and we like to leave around 5am, we beat all of the traffic in the outer banks and also around washing dc and virginia, this works for us.

Thanks for the advice. We want to leave early but the folks we are vacationing with want to leave around 9-10 am. We have a 15 hour drive ahead of us and want to get home at a decent hour. As everyone knows it is ehausting to travel, especially with kids and once the week is over we just want to get home! The other folks though are getting a little irritated that we want to leave early so I am not sure what we will do. Probably what they want since we don't want to make waves. Thanks again!
