Subject: duck vs corolla
we're narrowing down our vacation destination for this summer...just curious about the pros and cons between duck and corolla? My concerns about corolla is that if we want to visit hatteras is. or manteo for the day - traffic could be terrible getting in and out of corolla...

any care to share their opinion...

Duck and Corolla are both on NC12 although south Duck is probably 15 miles closer to Hateras/Manteo than north Corolla is. (Corolla is about 10 miles long; Duck is 6, Southern Shores is about 6, and then you reach the bypass.)
It's best to make the trek on a weekday, but not Friday, when it isn't raining. When it rains it seems everyone in the south heads north and vice versa.
Leave around 0830 or 0900 for least traffic. Some folks make the trek on Monday or Tuesday when more tourists are likely to be on the beaches instead of the roads.

As to Corolla or Duck, both are great. Study the realtors websites and look at maps so you can tell where you'll be.
Hope this helps.

It's not a big enough difference between Duck and Corolla in terms of getting down south to HI. From Corolla, you have to pass through the congestion of Duck and from Duck, well, you still are passing through Duck.

Both places have their strong points and are beautiful. Good luck.

Plenty of shopping in both areas. As a Corolla vacationer/owner, I typically start down in Duck and work my way back up to Corolla for shopping.

As far as restaurants go, you won't find the big places you have in Nags Head (Sam & Omies, Black Pelican, Kelly's etc), but there enough places to keep you well fed -- from linen tablecloth restaurants to pizza delivery. There are no "pancake house" type places in the northern beaches.

Keep your travel plans for Manteo and beyond on a non-rainy midweek day and you should be fine.

Corolla is where we always go -- particularly Corolla Light Resort -- Which offers 5 outdoor pools and an indoor pool at the sports center. We usually head to Manteo for a day trip from Corolla and never have trouble with traffic -- we usually go on Tuesday or Wednesday of the week. Try Brindley Beach Vacations for a great rental.

Don't forget..there is only one way in...and one way out...you are much better off going further down the island. South Nags Head is actually very nice.

Have to disagree with the opinion that you are much better off going further south. Different areas appeal to different people for different reasons. Even though it is one way in, I like it up there!

Equally appealing, Duck is more of a walking town than Corolla. Duck has some of the better eateries on the OBX.

we stay at duck landing, from there you can walk to alot of stores for shopping and some resterant. Pizza and ice cream parlars within walking distance. If you stay there in early june there are not as many people as july and it doesnt seem as crowed. We take our bikes for there is a bike trail that goes for miles. No matter where you choose you can go wrong after all it is the outer banks!!! Good luck and have a wonderful time.

Our family used to stay in Duck but the traffic woes drove us away (pun intended!). Seriously, we now stay in South Nags Head and enjoy it very much. It's much more centrally located on the OBX (equidistant to Hatteras and northern beaches). Lots of restaurant choices, more shopping (albeit strip-malls). What makes South Nags Head especially appealing is that it's less crowded. Because of the federal lands, from MP 16 down to MP 21 is at most a few houses deep. You do not have to compete for beach space, even at public access points.

As a vacationer/owner we find Duck to be a good starting point. It's located between Corolla (for those 4 wheel drive days) and Nags Head (for Putt-Putt and other family fun things). We have a house in Saltaire which is convenient to both the beach and shops. No driving for us!!!

Hatteras is a long drive regardless. I've been going to OBX for about 20 years, and we've gradually moved up and are now quite content in Buck Island (Corolla). For years we stayed in Duck, and would head down to Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, KDH, but now we rarely go down there as the northern end has everything you need.

The moral of the stroy is that where ever you chose, you can't go wrong.
