WE STAYED IN WAVES AREA LAST YEAR AND WASN'T HAPPY WITH THE DRIVE TO GET TO NAGS HEAD WHERE DECENT RESTARAUNTS WERE. WHAT IS THE COROLLA AREA LIKE? HOW FAR TO DECENT RESTARAUNTS AND SUCH?

Corolla has several good places to eat as does Duck which are close to each other. The drive is not as bad to corolla as it is to Waves but it can be a rough 30 miles from Kitty Hawk to Corolla in July.

There are "decent"restaurants in the tri-village but evidently you must prefer those taste of home ones that are inundating the NH-KDH area....Try enjoying local flavor when on vacation.

Some straight answers --

During the peak summertime, it can take up to an hour to get up to Corolla from the KDH area on a weekend. The rest of the year it takes about 25 minutes. If you are traveling during spring break, then it will take somewhere between those two times.

There are plenty of restaurants in Corolla. Fine dining can be found in front of the Currtick Club area, in the Tim Buck II shopping center and in the Corlla Light area. You also have your choice of family places, a sports bar, barbecue joints and pizza. If you are into chains there's subway and Burger King. There are not the huge places like Kelly's in Nags Head, the Black Pelican, Sam & Omies, etc. There also aren't any pancake houses of which there are many in NH.

As far as other activities go, there is plenty of shopping in Corolla and further south in Duck. There are two mini golf courses (they aren't like the ones in NH though), a small go cart place, the lighthouse, and a movie theater.

Any thing else you want to know?

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO "COROLLA FAN". WE ARE THINKING OF RENTING IN THE "OCEAN SANDS" AREA. ANY DRAWBACKS OR GOOD STUFF ABOUT THE OCEAN SANDS AREA?

Ocean sands has many beautiful homes in it. The layout of the area consists of cul-de-sac streets, so depending upon where you are, you can be right on the water or have a short walk to the beach. It is also close to restaurants/shopping, grocery stores (there are now 2 - Harris Teeter and Food Lion). Personally, I'prefer the Whalehead area. There houses are a little further apart. I have stayed in both areas and now I own a place in Whalehead. As far as rental companies go, I would point you in the direction of Brindley Beach, Twiddy, and Corolla Classics.

Some very interesting threads 9065. One of those posts said that the VA cars head to the right after crossing the bridge. Not true. I'm from VA and we head left! : )

Also, I forgot to sign my name to my other post #9064.

Hope all of this info helps original poster.

Try Corolla LIght -- It is wonderful with 3 ocean side pools and an indoor sports center with pool incase of bad weather.

Try Brindley Beach for great rentals. Here is the place we rented this summer:

summer time it is wall to wall here. DO NOT go out if it rains. I have seen it take 5 hours to go from Corolla to Duck. I have worked in Corolla for 10 years and drive almost 40 miles each way. I love it there.

"Corolla" is the 10 or so mile long portion of the Currituck County Outer Banks running from the Dare County border to Ocean Hill where NC 12 ends. Years ago people used to just refer to the area they were staying like Ocean Sands or Whalehead. Corolla was the small area around Currituck Beach lighthouse, the Twiddy office, Winks of Corolla and the post office.
Suggest you look at the websites of the big realtors in Corolla to see your many options.
Shopping and dining are great in Corolla, and Duck is the next town south with all its amenities.

Most of the questions have been covered but I will toss in my 2 cents:

1. If you found the drive from Waves to Nags Head hateful, you will completely hate the drive from the Corolla area to Nags Head. If you like the restaurants there, perhaps you may want to try a place in South Nags Head, not quite as crowded as the main area, but close enough to the attractions that the drive isn't bad.

2. Hatteras Island has some fantastic restaurants, if you liked the area check out some reviews by locals and long time visitors before the next trip so you know where to go and where to avoid.

3. As has been said, the drive from Corolla to "the main drag" can take from 25 minutes in the off-season to 1 + hours in the summer due to traffic through Duck. Duck has a slower speed limit due to people on the streets there and crossing the roads to shops. There is also usually a narl around Timbuck II if you need to travel through it. As always, during in-season, avoid driving south on Saturdays and Sundays if you can avoid it.

4. Restaurants in Corolla are great. It depends on what you are looking for but there is everything for everyone. People are a big fan of Steamer's to Go (not a seafood eater, don't know). Personally I adore Route 12 (steak and seafood), Mike & Diane's (steak, seafood), Cosmo's (pizza) and Duck Deli. Really depends on what you drive to NH for to eat. We always make a trip down for Art's and Captain Franks.

5. Ocean Sands, again, depends on what you are looking for by going north. Typically the houses are closer together than anywhere else in Corolla. Houses are smaller here, not many of the Giga-houses here which means a more reasonable price for rentals which is a great thing. If you are picky about walking to the beach though, make sure you really investigate via a map (either the realors or Google Earth) what the beach route is, some places it can be quite a hike to/from the beach especially when you add in beach stuff and bathroom breaks. Some sections of OS (they are lettered) have some community pools and tennis courts which can be a bonus as well. It's a nice area but also the most crowded private beach you'll find in the Outer Banks (there are no public beach accesses here).

Corolla has all kinds of stuff, and there are fun things like ATV tours in the 4X4 area (highly recommended for all ages). But the beach is great. Nothing like loading up the cooler (with adult and kid friendly beverages) and heading down at dusk to watch the moon rise over the ocean. I spent my teens, twenties, got engaged and passed on the OBX bug to the wife there. I will soon be bringing my first wee little one there this summer, so there is something for all ages. Oh yah, I didn't cover ages from ~4 to 10.....which I can use my nephews as an example........give them a flashlight at night and they will look for sand crabs for hours. Like I said, this place captivates people of all ages.

If that's not enough, places like Tim Buck 2 and the surrounding area have lots of shopping, and you can always hop in the car and head south.

I just got back from the Ocean Sands area. It was great! The house we stayed at was reasonably priced and even had a pool and hot tub. At only $2495, the house was great, even for 8 adults! The only drawback I saw about the vacation was the restaurants. We ate at Bad Bean Taqueria and were disgusted. If you like Chipotle, you will hate this place (and probably even if you don't like Chipotle). I only ate a small amount and felt sick. Plus, it is way overpriced. The Tomato Patch Pizzeria was pretty good. We went twice. The first time, the service was horrible, and they blamed it on a shift-change. The second time was a lot better. Giant Slice pizza was pretty good. Sooey's BBQ was not very good. All the food there was pretty plain. For two people, our total was over $30 and then you have to include a tip. I felt most of the places were overpriced. The best meal we had was at Goombay's in Kill Devil Hills. It was recommended to us by a bartender. I don't eat seafood, but the chicken sandwich was really good, and those I was with raved about the seafood.
