Subject: Travelling from NYC
Hello, my husband, two young children and I are planning our trip to Corolla for Christmas week, leaving from NYC. Can someone please tell me where is the best town to stop in for the night? Any lodging suggestions? Many thanks in advance!

Sorry, I didn't specify- we don't want to make the 8-9 hour trip in one shot and would like to stop somewhere in between for the night.

This is what I would do:

I would try to drive all the way to Williamsbug VA, this would give you only a 2 hour drive to the Outer Banks the next day. Williamsburg is a great stop during the holidays. Plenty to see and do and lots of lodging options.
Here's the website:

Let us know what you decide to do.

Have fun!

we live in NJ , 20 min. outside of NYC. Halfway mark would be approx. Pocomoke, MD.
Best food stop: Stingray's Truck Stop in Cape Charles, VA - looks funky, but was in Southern Cuisine several times.
- Speed traps: Start wathcing speed zones in Harrison, Seaford, Md. - speed will drop from 55-60 down to 35-45 in a matter of feet!

Are you coming down I 95 or via the Eastern Shore?

I suppose I-95, unless there is a better route...

There are several places right on 95 just north of Richmond (Ashland area. This would give you about a 5-6 hour drive from NJ (assuming you take a few bathroom stops for the kids) and then about 3-4 hours to get to Corolla, again assuming you make some stops.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and do NOT drive any further south on I-95 than the Delaware Memorial Bridge at the very bottom of the NJTP. Well, actually you should drive I-95 for 5 miles past the bridge, look for Route 1 South. Drive Route 1 South all the way to Dover and just after passing Dover Int'l Speedway (the NASCAR track) get off onto Route 13 South. Rt. 13 will be the only road you need all the way to VA Beach, which is about 2.75 hours away from your destination. When you leave the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on Rt. 13, there are several chain hotels on Northampton Ave. (still Rt. 13) to choose from. Personally, I'd just complete the trip to NC....more time in OBX! Good Luck.

9017 is right.
95 could be a traffic nightmare depending on what time you hit the DC beltway (495)

Wow, I really appreciate all of your suggestions and advices! Can you tell me the town where Northampton Avenue is? Any suggestions on restaurants in that area or are they mostly chain?

Yuo can see NorthHampton Blvd on this map.

It's not the prettiest area, you could always stay at the beach - take Shore Dr (see map)

So how do we get to Corolla after staying overnight in VA beach?

To Post 9031:

After your restful night in VA Beach, find your way to I-64 towards Chesapeake (NOT towards Richmond). You will be accessing in the vacinity of about Exit 282. Travel towards Chesapeake and the exit number should be going up, you need Exit 291B (signs will indicate Nags Head & Manteo) on Route 168 which is a toll road. Follow thru the tolls (car is $2.00) and about 5 miles later you'll be in North Carolina. Stay on Rt. 168 South and it will become Rt. 158, continue down thru Currituck, Grandy, Harbinger and accross the Wright Memorial Bridge. Just after crossing the bridge, about a mile later you will see signs for Rt. 12 North to Southern Shores, Duck, Corolla. One way in, one way out....Route 12. Enjoy your vacation!

i really think it would be pointless to stay in VA beach, if you are going to stay there, you might as well drive the whole way. its only about an 1.5 hr drive to the outer banks
(unless you get lost, sorta easy to do)

I agree with Brigand's Bay Homeowners post #9017 re getting off I 95. The route down the eastern shore is pretty.

Consider spending the night in Chincoteague, Va, a pretty little town (home of Misty) with some nice motels and fishing village type restaurants. We stayed there this summer coming back from a wedding in Mass and enjoyed it.
It's about 3, maybe 3 1/2 hours from the Outer Banks.

As much as we all would like to get to our destination in one day, with two young kids under the age of four would be extremely impossible and stressful to do so. So we intend to stop off and stretch and relax before hitting our rental for the week.

Again, I truly appreciate all of your advices!

If you do decide to go to Williamsburg for your overnight, definitely stay at the Hamtpon Inn-- we stayed there on our way at Thanksgiving and were VERY impressed. After tax, the rate was only $86 and it was well worth it-- down comforters, business room w/ internet, expansive breakfast, and really neat black and white photo decor. Just had to give them props because we were very happy with our stay (and I'm normally very picky!). Have a safe drive and a great vacation!
