Subject: seeing the horses
we are at Corolla Light right NOW. Can we see the horses on our own or do we need a guide? Have you ever rented a Jeep and done the trip on your own? What do you suggest?

Your best chance of seeing the horses is to go on one of the guided tours. One company takes you in Suburbans, another uses jeeps, a third uses vintage Toyota Land Cruisers.
All the companies travel back into the interior, behind the dunes, where you really need to know what your doing when driving in deep sand.

As of yesterday, there was still a lot of flooding in the off road area. Plus, at high tide the winds and waves from Florence left no hard sand to drive on, just soft deep sand.

Based on all that, I'd take a tour. Don't wait too long to book it!

Just got back from Corolla on the 4WD area and saw horses every day in our yard and the roads. If you have a 4WD vehicle go to the end of the road and drive about 8 miles to mile marker 21 or 22, the one with the firehouse sign. When you turn left and go over the dunes go up to the firehouse and turn left again we saw plenty on that road alone, go up and turn right when you see a flourescent green house with a bus the same color on the far right there were about 7 every day in the yard just past that house. Make sure you go early enough that it isn't too dark to drive back because there are no street lights and believe me it is DARK. We saw horses everyday, fox every night and an occasional deer and rabits. Go to maps on Yahoo.com and print out the road maps for up that way if you really want to do some searching, there is an area of houses called Wild Horse Estates were there was a bunch of horses also.

We were just there...we took a tour (and loved it), but the horses were right on the beach. You certainly didn't need anyone to guide you to those. We did see them on the back roads and yes, there is a lot of flooding. But, we saw counted a minimum of 15 in an hour.

Granted, it's all luck of the draw and you never know where they'll be at any given time.

I suggest checking out the 4wd area on your own (it's great beach, surf, etc) and then if you don't see any book a tour. We book ours the day before (and they even offered us that day.)

I was up there last week and saw 4 horses and a colt about 3 miles up from the paved road, took alot of very nice pics, got real close, actually they seemed very tame, they stayed around and let all the people that were there get all the pictures they wanted.
