Subject: 4X4 rentals
I will be driving a rental car from PA to the Frisco/Hatteras area.I would like to rent a 4x4 somewhere close to these locations, since I can only drive one vehicle at a time and leaving the first rental for a period of time at some unknown location would make me uncomfortable. Is there any rental agency close to either of these two towns?

Outer Banks Chrysler Jeep etc. in Kill Devil Hills rents them and you could leave your other vehicle there I expect.

It's probably another 50 miles or so down to Frisco area.

STay away from OBX Chrysler.....

We have had to rent 4x4s twice while at the OBX ....in 2003 and 2001 when our Ford Exploder broke down on the beach (both times major problems).....

The chrysler dealer would rent us a 4x4 but said that if the vehcile came back with sand in the interior, etc there would be a $150 cleaning fee......and seemed very concerned about the vehicle being driven on the beach.....they were also the most expensive rental fee...

Midgette did right by us.....we were calling at the last minute and luckily they had something each time.....first time wasa Jeep CJ and then the other year a Jeep Cherokee...decent fee, no problem with using them on the beach.....

Hopefully we wont ever need to rent again , but if we do we will call them first....

But I second the questiom -- why not just rent one in PA ?? The gas mileage may be a factor but the hassle factor will be reduced, plus availability will not be a hassle....

Rented a Ford Escape 4WD in NJ from Hertz through AAA for $366 for 8 days. Avis, Enterprise and Budget also had good deals. The mileage was unlimited, we did vacuum the interior and wash off the sand from the wheel wells and exterior before returning it.

Watch with out of state rentals, as some contracts will not allow you to take them out of state (or neighboring states). Some have GPS in them so they can track where they have been.

I know that Twiddy agency in Corolla will let you leave your car in their parking lot if you are renting a 4X4 house.

Outer Banks Chrysler.Dodge. and Jeep have rentals. They are reasonably priced and have a place for you to leave your vehicle. They were very friendly and accomadating. We rented the 4 door Jeep to go to Corolla and had a blast and saw the horses too.
