Subject: New to Outer Banks
Hello All!!! I am an Outer Banks "newbie" and was wondering if some of you would offer some suggestions or opinions regarding the best locations to stay. Being that this will be more of a family vacation with about 10 adults and 6 young children we are trying to strike a balance between pure relaxation and things to do. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I suggest Duck for your first visit. Plenty to do--shopping, dining, riding bikes on Duck Trail, kayaking, rent a sailboat or take a lesson, rent a jetski, go parasailing, learn to surf, fly a kite on the beach, and great beaches.
You'll be just 10 miles south of Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Whalehead Club and the new nature center at the Whalehead club in Corolla, and more shopping and dining options.
The Wright Bros. National Monument is about 15 miles south of Duck in KDH, and is worth a visit.

What time of year do you plan to visit?

Gosh, so many different areas--it depends on what you are looking for.
Hatteras is great for fishing--Duck very quaint--Corolla a little more remote--Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills are right in the center so more to do there.

Sun Realty has places all over--many companies specialize in Corolla only, like Corolla Classics. Village Realty has some really nice homes in Nags Head and Corolla and Twiddy has nice selection in Duck. OBX Blue is new this year --seems to be doing well and has homes in Duck and Corolla

If you are looking for shopping--there are some good outlets at Tanger Mall in Nags Head.
Restaurant selections good everywhere--depends on what you want.
Kill Devil Hills is the geographic center of Dare County and a lot of the local people live there. Plenty to do.
Duck very nice, love it there too.
Hatteras is also great--takes longer to get there but worth it. If you really want to get away try Ocracoke Island.
hey, it's all good

If you are looking for a family vacation venue that will stimulate new interests and sooth past anxieties that tend to appear when a large group gathers, you need to find the tranquility of Swan Beach in the 4X4 area of Corolla. Here you will find exceptional value in the semi-oceanfront homes - the non-buildable oceanfront lots open the window to spectacular unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean...and don't forget the wild horses, your kids will love them. Think about a house with a pool! If you don't have a 4X4, you can rent one and leave your own car in Twiddy's parking lot...safe and sound.

If you are going to the Currituck lighthouse area- stop at the visitors center, they are VERY helpfull in giving you a list of things to do. Also pick up a copy of the Parks newsletter it shows all of the FREE activities offered for kids and families, crabbing with a ranger, campfires nature hikes...so much to do and as you will see not enough time. Nobody ever wants to come home at the end of the week.
