Subject: tan in october?
Never been there n October but just cant seem to get in a summer vacation this year! We are thinking about goin in mid-october. Everyone says the weather is great but is it hot? Like, can you lay on beach and get a tan? Can you go swimming without freezing?

We have been down for Thanksgiving some years where it has been warm enough to lay on the beach. Other years...forget it. Just depends.

Early Oct is usually not too bad here. The water will still be warm but not like it is in Aug/Sept. Later Oct and it will start to get cooler. I have walked the beach in shorts in December more than a few times, but normally it is sweat pants weather after Oct.

same holds true for March/April, some weeks are great, others are what you might expect for early spring.

The water is always cold in April/May but the air temps can be ok if the winds die down from 20-40 mph in the spring.

We were at the OBX the second week of October 2005, and the sun did not shine the whole week, until the Saturday we checked out. It was somewhat chilly and windy on the beach; had to wear a jacket. However, with that said, we know it's not like that all the time; we just hit "one of those weeks!" We love the OBX and hope you do too!

To me, an owner, Sept and Oct are the BEST months to go to the OBX. It is warm and uncrowded. You may not get a tan, but that will be just fine with your dermotologist!

Agreed with most posts. I've been down in nearly every month from early april to late october. The weather in spring and fall is definatly hit or miss. however, your chances of swimming comfortable are better in the fall, water temps are higher in the fall than the spring, especially in the sound. That being said, the waves are bigger in the fall as well. its also good to note that if you go farther south, the air temp normally gains a degree or two from the northern beaches in the fall.

We have been there the first part of Oct and have had wonderful warm days and warm water. A lot less crowded and good deals on clothing and souviners
