Subject: Little ones & the Wild Horses tours
We have two boys ages 3 and 17 mths. We think they would love to see the wild horses, but we do not have 4X4.

Has anyone taken children that young on these tours? I know they say "lap-sitters" but is the drive too rough for them to not be in car seats? I'm really not an obsessive mom -- just wondering what others have done?

It is a pretty rough drive. I probably wouldn't take a 17 month old.

We took the wild horse tour last summer with our boys (ages 12-4) and another family who had 2 year old twins. We all loved the tour - these drivers know exactly where to find the horses and can get you really up close to them. Our boys enjoyed riding in a car without car seats, too! We felt perfectly safe as did our friends with the twins. Definitely take them on the tour.

While the ride can be bumpy, it is not at high speed. Very "kid friendly". Our guide went out of his way to show my boys a lot of intersting sights.

Yes it can be bumpy. By all means take your kids!! We took our 19 mth old and she was fine. She actually loved the "ponies and horsies".

While there in July we all went on a "pony" tour~ we took my 5 month old grandson.....im sure he had no clue what we were doing, but it wasnt bumpy enough that he wasnt ridin' in our lap, although we took the car seat~ just in case it was. And yes the drivers, ours was James from the rental place up in Corolla Light area~ was great, he didnt try to "dunebuggy" us down the beach, and was very, very informative. I know I learned alot. But yes, if your kids like horses, take 'em!!

I would not let my child ride as a "lap sitter". First in NC i believe it is illegal, and secondly the tours do drive up to 40 MPH or so on the road and the vehicles on the beach do have the potential to roll-over. To me at least it is irresponsible to ride with a young child on your lap. They need to be in a car seat.
