Subject: Northern Beaches/Horses
We are staying in Corolla this week. How far of a drive is the 4 x 4 area from TimBuck 2 area? We would really like to take the kids to see the horses if possible. Any suggestions on how far up we should go?

Thanks!!

Last year we saw them only as far up as 2 miles but if you drive up about 5 miles we saw a lot more of them. Definitely worth the drive, go up just as it's getting dark. Don't forget your camera.

It is about 5-6 miles from Tim-Buck II to where the road ends, and another 12 miles up to Carova on the NC/VA border. The horses roam free up there and could be anywhere, not necessarily on the beach where you'll be driving. I may se horses one out of every five times I drive up there, but others are luckier.
Your best chance of seeing the horses and learning interesting information about the area is go with one of the two excellent tour companies--Bob's Hourse Tours or Wild Horse Safari. I'm told the tours are well worth the money. These guys drive up off the beach into the interior. They know where the horses are because they are up there with them every day.
Better their vehicle and experienced sand drivers than yours!
Or try it on your own if you are set on that.

I stayed up there for a wek and only saw them twice and we dove out every day to Corolla.Once on the shore and once in our yard. Ive heard they stay far up and inland a little. I assume they drink form the sound side so they are probaly there more than the beach side where most people go.alsoheard there is a pig and a donkey! I saw the donkey so i know thats true!

I guess I'm lucky because I see them every time I go or stay up there, one time I had one come right up to me and my kids right outside the house we were staying at, I'm glad I had my camera with me, got some really cool pics
