Subject: Ocracoke Island
My wife and I are going to the Outer Banks for a week in Sept, we're thinking about heading to Ocracoke for a few days. Can anyone tell me what it's like and what to expect...

Ocracoke is just charming ~ it has always reminded me a bit of a New England fishing village. There are some wonderful restaurants, cute shops. September is a great month to be on the Outer Banks. Where are you staying the rest of the week?

If you're on Ocracoke for dinner, I can't recommend the Back Porch highly enough.

Ocracoke is beautiful, but there isn't much there to do. Believe a couple days would be all you need to soak up the atmosphere. There is not much in the way of accomidations there so you'd better find something now and book it to get something decent.

The great thing about Ocracoke is what "isn't" there...not a lot of shops, etc. Ocracoke is made for relaxing. It beholds the most beautiful beaches on the Outer Banks and is great for shell hunting.

There are excellent restaurants - The Back Porch is terrific. The North Carolina Dept of Natural Resources used to give informal talks about the history of the island and the pirates. Really, there's plenty to do - you can be as busy or relaxed as you want.

You'll love Ocracoke.

Ocracoke Island is approximately 14 miles in length with about 800 year round residents. Our village is approximately 1 mile in length while the remaining 13 miles of the island are beautiful unspoiled beaches. The beaches are great for walking, shelling, fishing and swimming. Four wheel drive access on the beach is available in designated areas. The village is situated on the sound side of the island around Silver Lake Harbor. Walking or biking easily accesses all points within the village. Bike rentals are available on site.

Ocracoke Activities:

Fishing - Charters are available at the Marina
Boating
Kayaking
Boat Tours to Portsmouth Island
Sunset Cruises
Dolphin Cruises
Cruising Guide to Coastal NC
Parasailing
Shopping in the many unique shops
Museum
British Cemetery
Nature Trails
Pony Pen with Spanish Ponies from shipwrecks
Crabbing & Clamming
Pirate History
Pirate Cruises
Pirate Shop - Teach's Hole

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina is always in the Top 10 best beaches in the US.

Interesting Fact:
Ocracoke Island, NC is where pirate Blackbeard once roamed.

Keep in mind:
A free ferry service runs to Ocracoke Island from Hatteras Island...a 40-minute trip. (BUT, in the summer, waiting lines get long.)

The beaches are beautiful but there is not much else there. So if you have good weather and love the beach, you will be in your glory!

If you do go to Ocracoke plan on stopping to eat at Howard's Pub. It is very casual and a laid back atmosphere, with very unique decor but they food is pretty good.

The island of Ocracoke is a part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is the most southerly inhabited island of the Outer Banks, and can only be reached by one of three public ferries (two of which are toll ferries), private boat, or private plane.

Other than the village of Ocracoke and a few other areas (a campground, a pony pen, a small runway), the entire island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. A single paved two-lane road, NC 12, runs from the village at the southern end of the island to the ferry dock at the northern tip of the island, where a free ferry connects to Hatteras Island. The second ferry dock, located in the village, has toll connections to Swan Quarter, North Carolina on the mainland and Cedar Island, near Atlantic, North Carolina. Ocracoke Island Airport (FAA Identifier W95) is located slightly south-east of the village, allowing small aircraft to land.

Ocracoke is always my beach of choice. I love the island charm and the fact I will NEVER see a McDonalds or any other franchise there. The gift shops are full of very unique items and the local art sold in some of the shops and restaurants is fantastic...got quite a bit of it in my home!
We camp at the National Seashore campgrounds located between the village and Hatteras ferry. There's your tent, a row of dunes, then the ocean...what could possibly be better?! No electric hookups at this one, has bath houses with sicks and toilets, and shower stalls where you pull the string and cold water comes out! It's the BEST!
For those that need electricity and hot water, there are campgrounds in the village too.
Pony Island Restaurant is a MUST for breakfast (YUM...pony potatoes)! Howard's Pud is a favorite for lunch or dinner. The slushy stand too (YUM...snow cream snow ball)!
