Subject: Sound vs. Ocean?
Hey all
does anyone know what the difference between sound side vs. ocean side is? Can one actually swim in the sound side, and would it be better for those with children since there are less waves, or is it mainly boat docks?

thanx

Really no swimming on the sound, its fairly shallow and kids can wade-in. Usually there aren't many really broad beaches. There are docks and the sunsets are amazing. Ocean is of course the ocean. Finding a place on the sound side will save some money and if its not too far from the ocean you can get both perspectives. Some houses in Duck are very high on the soudn side and dual views.

I live on Currituck Sound in the north part of Duck. Small children love the sound here because it is so shallow. Nowhere is is deeper than five feet, and that's way out. Wear water shoes cause the bottom is yuck. Most soundfront rentals have kayaks for the renters, or you can rent them.
Make sure the house you rent has sound access-lots don't. Some of the developments have a sound access poinr, but it may not be near where you are staying. Yes, we have the sunsets.
From here the ocean access is about a five minute walk.

Your question sounds so simple to some of us ,im sure. But before I started going to the ocean I never knew the difference either.Go onto Twiddy.com. Look at almost any house and there is a link for an ariel view. It will show the ocean , then the land (OBX) then the sound. It is basically just a shallow, calm, warm water.(Im not sure but I dont think it is salt water. Maybe someone else can clarify that). Best to jetski or fish in. It is rather 'mucky' on the bottom and basically no beach.alot of places on OBX are so narrow you can walk from one side to the other! For me, staying on Ocean side is the only way to go.When looking for a house,"soundside means on West side of Highway 12, Oceanside means East side of highway 12. (OH YA..Highway 12 is a two lane road that runs up and down OBX throughout all the different commmunities. I hope this helped!!

If your children are small or not strong swimmers, I suggest the sound side. The ocean side drops off pretty quickly and rip tides can be tricky even for the best of swimmers and then there's the undertow . . . But, if you're not swimming, then it won't matter if you go to the ocean or the sound.

And, I believe the Pamlico Sound is an estuary with both salt and fresh water.

OCEANSIDE IS GREAT BUT USUALLY A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE. WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE OUTER BANKS FOR 11 YEARS AND THE LAST 2 WE WERE ON THE SOUNDSIDE. SHORT WALK TO THE OCEAN. WE DID NOTICE SNAKES THIS YEAR ON THE SOUND, THEY SAY IS UNUSUAL. I JUST WON'T STAY SOUNDFRONT BECAUSE OF THAT. SOUNDSIDE IS STILL NICE, WE JUST TRY TO STAY OUT OF HEAVILY WOODED AREA. WE PREFER MONTERAY SHORES IN COROLLA. NICE AMENITIES.

Currituck Sound is considered brackish fresh water. The nearest ocean inlet is Oregon Inlet, about 45 miles south of the Currituck County/Dare County border.
The salinity level of Currituck Sound is usually around 2 or 3 parts per thousand.
The ocean's salinity today at Duck Pier is 30.76 ppt.
