I would say it will take you about 1 and 1/2 hours or so to get down to where you can catch the ferry to Ocracoke. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes. It's probably around 60 miles or so from Nags Head.

1.75 hrs is about right if there is no traffic. Add traffic and you need to add about 15-20 min to the ferry.

Depending when you go, the wait for the ferry could be LONG! Get up early to make the first ferry, then eat breakfast on Ocracoke at the Pony Island Restaurant.

I went to www.mapquest.com and typed in Elizabeth City NC (because that's part of the way we are traveling there) to Hatteras NC. The result was 118 miles and a 2hr 45 minute drive. But if you type in Nags Head to Hatteras you'll have a better idea.

I have also asked some of the realtors the distance from Frisco to Hatteras and the Ferry. They say that's only 5 minutes. From Avon to Hatteras about 20 minutes. Remember these people live there so who should know better. By the way if you're into shelling and horse, since you are going to Ocracoke, check out Shackleford Banks.
