We vacation in the 4x4 area on Swan Beach. We are thinking of going farther north this year, somewhere around the 8-9 mile mark. Everyone says it is very tranquil and private the farther up you go. BUT as i am looking at aeriel views and just general searching it looks like there are a lot MORE houses up there than at the 3-6 mile area. Any input on this?? Thank you in advance for help!

I think it has to do more with beach traffic. Seems to be less the further up you go.

Ive never found that part of the beach to be that crowded, especially september on. I guess it depends if you idea of crowded means no one sitting within 100 feet of you or no one in eyesite.

If you really want to be alone and dont mind the walk, drive to the virginia border and walk a mile in to False Cape. You will be very alone.

North. Where North Carolina ends there is a series of telephone poles with wire in between that keeps horses and cars from entering Virginia (on the beach). You will have to walk in to Virginia.

False cape state park begins here in Virginia and its 10 or so miles of absolutely nothing.

Probably obvious but the name Carova is Carolina and Virginia put together.

never noticed that before (the name). Is that really where it is derived from?

How long (time wise) does it take to drive from end of road to end of Carova?Do the houses go all the way up to the border or stop at a certain mile post? Thanks.

the houses go all the way. from paved road to va. line is not far in miles but takes some time to drive. maybe 35-45 minutes depending on conditons.

We are thinking of renting 8/19 up in Carova, the answers to this post were very helpful. My question is: Is the driving more difficult because it is so far up there? We drove up to Swan Beach last year but not up that far. Are the driving conditions the same? Also they said the canal system is up there, is that the waterways that are within the streets on the map? And if so are the bugs worse up there?

We rented a house close to the end last summer ( 2 rows back) and I remeber there were these flys/bugs that would come out from the trees/bushes and swarm around you but the beaches were bug free.as for the driving, basically it's all the same, all the way up there, low tide is the way too drive, very easy, high tide is a chore and makes for a long ride.

From my experience the black flying bugs are better or worse depending on the direction of the wind. If im not mistaken i remeber that if wind is blowing off the ocean the are not bad...the opposit direction of the wind (coming out of the woods) the are BAD!I would imagine the degree of infestaion would be the same up and dpwn the coast. I dont know what you mean when youa sk about the canals...there are no 'streets' up there.

The 4x4/Carova area is a very nice place to vacation, very peaceful most of the time, the canals you ask about are just that, some rental houses on the sound have boat slips on these canals. There are "streets" but they are all sand made, and after rainfall some become impassable or you have to manuver around the large puddles, be careful not to go thru them, because you don't really know how deep some are. Mostly you learn how to drive up there as you go, use "common sense" and you will be ok, always try and arrange your drive time to the tides, hours around low tide being the best time because you have the packed sandy beach to travel on and makes for a nice ride, hours around high tide you loose the packed sand and have to drive thru unpacked sand and other vehicles tracks, which makes for a longer trip and you get to use some of your good driving skills. The bugs are not bad on the beach because of the breeze coming in but the further inland you are,or just over the dunes, they are at times bad, espically those pesky large flies that like too buzz aound your head. The 4x4 area is not for everyone and like I said, you learn as you go and alot of people on this board have covered alot of topics on this, a good idea is too do a search on this board and read up on the other questions that were asked and answered. Have fun, we always do!!

If you're looking for tranquility...Swan Beach is where you want to be. Get "oceanfront" views at semi-oceanfront prices in Swan Beach...this is because the oceanfront lots in Swan Beach are not buildable at the present time. The oceanfront lots in North Swan and Carova almost all have houses on them already.

We have spent the last two years up on North Swan Beach, about 9 miles up around Corova. We were there the first week in June and never had any probs with traffic or overly populated beaches. It is very tranquil. This year we are going to Swan beach in September and greatly look forward to it. The driving is about the same all the way up the beach except for the area just before the Va. state line. It gets a little narrow there especially at higher tides. ALWAYS be sure to air down to 15-20 psi and have a 4x4 and you will have a great vacation.
