Subject: First Timers -- Lots of Questions!
I am taking my wife and 2 year old twins to the Outer Banks this summer -- our first time there. (It should be noted, we are also taking our dog, too!)

Here are my questions:
1. When is the best time of the summer to go?
2. Is Labor Day weekend going to be insanely crowded there?
3. Is it too hot in August and/or too cold in September/October to go?
4. Where is the best place to go for beauty and calmness -- we don't need a night life, and are looking for less crowds as much as possible. We have considered, so far, Nags Head and Duck -- are we on track?
5. Any other tips?

Thanks!!
Darren

Q #4 - 2nd, 3rd & 4th weeks of Sept is PERFECT - great daytime temps, ideal ocean temps, comfortably cool at night, less crowds, cheaper rates...shall I continue.

GO in SEPT - in you can!

Only drawback is it's still hurricane season.

Wouldn't stop me.

Labor day not crowded, actually less crowded. Go to 4x4 area, basically furthur north you go more peaceful. Duck is kinda a tight little community, but overall OBX is not crowded. Good luck finding a place this late for labor day that accepts pets. I cannot find a suitable house for us. Perhaps your criteria is differnt than mine though.

I like third week september prices drop almost in half weather is great. I also stay real far south around Hatteras Village less people and traffic. This house is in the area I stay at http://www.outerbeaches.com/rejuvena_d
and we love it there. Warmest south facing beaches We will be right down the street that week. Can't wait only 45 days to go till OBX vacation time!!!!

Mid-Sept. to mid-Oct. are terrific in Duck with less than half the tourists that are here in the summer. Ditto for traffic. Ocean and sound temps will be nice and warm.
Buy trip insurance in case of a hurricane.

Sept/Oct is our favorite time of year to be there. We love the Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe area ~ talk about laid back!

The past 2 years we've gone in late September. 75-85 during the day and cool in the evenings. No traffic and don't have to wait at the restaurants. We stay in Duck every year and love it. Hurricanes are our only worry, but so far (knock on wood) we've been lucky. Good luck!

We go first or second week of June. Cheaper rates, warm weather (not hot) but cold ocean temps which is ok because we sit on the beach and just let the waves come up on us a bit. We have small children too, so we usually get a house with a heated pool anyway. We stay in Avon on Hatteras Island. No crowds that time of year.

Our family has always gone either mid August to end of August. Works out great and the closer to the end of August you go, the prices for rental homes begin to go down.

We always stay in Duck, Four Seasons and love it there.

We are scheduled to go back August 26th this year and already looking forward to it. We rent our home from Twiddy and they have always been great, you can also call them and they will be able to find something for you so it helps you from doing the search. At least, they can narrow it down and send you a list of homes to chose from.

Good Luck!!

Dont want to seem like i am arguing the point (im not the troll!LOL) but i just have a different opinion of Ocean Sands...I think it is so crowded. Houses upon house. Corolla is a wonderful little town though ad houses are beautiful. Town overall not crowded, just houses in that community too close for my comfort.

We always go in one of the first 2 weeks of October, the weather is still great, and much less $$ for rental. If you are not into going out much, I would say stay anywhere on Hatteras island. Much more relaxed and NO traffic.

post 7204 - if you are not going out much why would you need to worry about traffic? Just kidding around-

We have always gone in Mid-July but I would love to go in September or October. It sounds like a really great time to go. We stay in the Na.s Head area. It all depends what you like, if you just like hanging around the house and going nowhere, then Duck, Corollo and beaches North and Avon, Hatteras and beaches South are for you. But if you like to get out and sight-see, shop, eat out, go to a movie then Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head or the 'center' beaches would be your pick, all depends on your tastes and what you like.
