Any suggestions on which area as the best beaches for kids. We were in the area
10 years ago when the rip tides were very strong.

the outer banks are known for their strong currents and rip tides. that is why the surfers flock there.

Rip tides move and change. So you never now when one might show up. I can't tell you that one part of the beach is safer than another... or even calmer than another. That beach is in Hilton Head....

I am a parent and take my son there, but I make him wear a life vest in the water at all time (he is seven and a good swimmer on swim team, but he still must wear it). And I never take my eyes off him.

Good luck making your decision.

We are planning a trip in June. I have a 11 & 14 yr old kids. Both pretty strong swimers. When you say they have strong currents and rip tides, how strong could you tell a little more about this? Thanks..

Common sense is the key here, as at all ocean beaches. Don't swim when the red flags are up, don't swim alone, and swim near the lifeguards' stands. Most of all--supervise your kids.
Talk to the guards about rip currents. They'll tell you that if you get caught in one, don't fight it, let it carry you out. When it lets go, and it will, swim parallel to the beach until you can turn toward shore and swim in. The guards watch for this stuff all the time. Suggest you practice the rip current drill with the kids a couple of times.
Where are you staying this trip?

You could go to the sound side of the island for beach time, it's calmer than the ocean and you can wade out further.

right now its hard to say what beaches are the best for kids as the bottom changes contiunously. last summer the ocean bay access(kdh) was probably the most kid friendly beach towards the middle of july to the end of aug. it was shallow and i dont recall many rescues due to rip currents, but def. follow the rest of the info given. there is rip current info on the out banks chamber of commerce site, check it out please. 11 & 14 are a real good average age of kids that need to be rescued, mostly due to an overestimated ability

Go to the Haul over area just below Avon, (AKA Canadian hole) A popular wind surfing place. It's sound side very little currant and a mostly sandy bottom.

Being on the ocean can very from day to day so you will need to check the conditions daily , Some days its as calm as a lake. If you go to a guarded beach they will tell you the conditions.
