Subject: saturday traffic
I live in Connecticut and am renting a Sat/Sat house in Corolla. I'm planning on arriving in OBX around 8pm on Saturday. Should I arrive later or is this a good time? Thank you.

There will be steady traffic going north from Kitty Hawk to Corolla but you will not see much back up anywhere unless there is a wreck or something like that to slow it down.

Too bad you can't arrange to arrive in Chesapeake area on Friday instead (many cheap hotels) and then drive over the bridge to arrive in Corolla around 9 on Sat. That's what we did last year and will do again this year. Even though the house won't be ready, you can have breakfast, drive around the area, and when you find out what time your house will be ready, you can get to the supermarket before the crowds. Have fun!

I agree with the post to get some of the trip behind you before Saturday if possible. My suggestion though would be to stop at a supermarket and get atleast enough food to get through night and morning 1. Avoid the store crowds on the island!

This meassage is very similar to mine so I thought I'd chime in: We are leaving from CT next Friday and staying in VA Beach for one night. I know that VA Beach is about 2 hours from OBX. What is the best time to schedule our arrival in Kitty Hawk at the rental agency? Also, where before the island should we stop for food supplies?

For areas north of KH - be on the island prior to 10am. Find your place and dump your stuff in the garage/carport. Go to the beach and wait for your place to be ready. Sometimes the cleaning crews get done much earlier than the 3 / 4 pm check in time. Hit the Food Lion or the Harris & Teeters early too. Check-out be on your way off of the Island O-dark-30 especially if you're headed north, VA - DC - MD traffic is excruciatingly bad. Use the Delmarva Peninsula if you can.
