Subject: Traffic on Return Trip Home
What's traffic like trying to leave the Outer Banks on a Saturday morning? How about on a Friday evening? Heading north to Pennsylvania.

we are from pa too and we always leave about 4 in the morning to get a jump on things. Start runing into some around chesepeke tunnel but not too bad

Last year we left at 4am Saturday morning and we back home (just north of Philly) by 11. May hit a little traffic coming from VA Beach and Ocean City MD, but minimal at that time.

You rarely see any backups in the mornings. I don't think you need to leave at 4am to miss anything here. 10-noon can get crowded when you get near a rental office.

We live near Cleveland...left Carova Beach on a Saturday about 8:00am and it was smooth sailing with no backups.

We just returned from Nags Head this past Saturday. We left around 8:30AM. Getting to Richmond area was a breeze (via 158 - > 32/13 --> Va460 --> I-295. No traffic to speak of really.

Our biggest problem was getting to and through the DC area, specifically between Fredricksburg and I-495. I-95 is a nightmare in *both directions* in this area during the afternoon (early to mid-morning is OK). If you can somehow avoid I-95, do so.

We do check out at 10am and go shopping. Since you are basically being cheated out of a day because of check in/check out time we like to spend the afternoon shopping. That way also it seems traffic clears up somewhat.

If you can get ogff the island by 0800 you'll have no problem.
About Friday evening, if it is raining you can expect a lot of the people who would leave on Saturday getting out of town a day earlier. Plus, depending on the hour, you might run into rush hour traffic in Hampton Roads, not to mention DC if you're going up that way.
