What's the traffic like these days heading into the Outer Banks? How much of a delay can we expect, on a Saturday, both heading in and out of the area?

A lot.

Plan on a standstill over the bridge and if you're going north to Duck and beyond, plan on a long line of cars winding along the one-lane road.

Going south you at least get more than one lane, but you also get stoplights.

Just try not to get TOO excited when you get close-- it's like the last 3 minutes of a football game:)

High season rule of thumb: be on and off the island by 0930 to avoid the traffic. People don't seem to get this, and end up backed up for several hours on the mainland late Saturday afternoon/evening.

We came in from the west last year, through Manteo. There was no traffic at all, however we came on a Sunday. Is this route really busy on Saturday too? We are coming on Saturday this year.

OK, I'm expecting a "standstill" on the bridge, but what I can't remember is how long of a delay it causes -- 1 hour or so, or much longer?

That's kind of hard to predict, but I'd say an hour or so.

This brings back memories of driving over from Richmond with my brother...in his Mustand convertible. Not a good idea when your at a standstill on a big bridge with lots of birds:)

Coming from the north it took me about 5 hours to go what would take me on a non-Saturday day to go 1/2 hours. I got stuck about 20 miles outside of the bridge around 2 or so and I didn't get to Corolla to check in until 7. Now I know why we always travel at night.

I've never gone through Manteo but I'm eager to hear how that traffic is as we're staying in Hatteras (Rodanthe) for the first time this year...

We arrived Saturday around 4:00 pm and never hit any backups coming in last Saturday and we came home to upstate NY yesterday (Saturday)at 4:00 pm and never hit backups going out of OBX but the other side going in to OBX on Saturday at 4:00 was a huge backup way past the bridge..... Wouldn't want to have sat in that! Leaving at 4:00 PM on Saturday to drive to NY was perfect and never hit backups all the way home!!!!! Not even in VA/Md

We have gone two different routes. Last year we took a route that bypassed the tunnel.

We are traveling I64 East. Anyone have an idea what we did. It seems to me, that we went south before the tunnel.
