Subject: Great stay in Avon
Just wanted to say our family vacationed in Avon last week and had a wonderful time. I had checked the message board many times for info before our trip. I found all info both helpful and correct. We booked through Hatteras Realty and had great service. With kids we didn't venture far from the pool or beach. Shopped at Food Lion and smaller grocery retailers and found prices to be ok. Gas prices seemed to also be average. All in all we thought it was a beautiful place for a family vacation. I don't wish to offend anyone, but was wondering why so many jobs were filled by young (I assume) Russian people? They were always courteous and service was great. After we got home and reflected on our stay we were curious if there was some sort of exchange program during the busy season. Thanks for all the helpful info. We are already planning a trip next year.

Our first trip to the OBX was last year and we wondered the same thing about the number of college age foreign kids.

Glad you had a great time in Avon. We will be there in 9 days--woohoo!

As far as the European help goes. They advertise over there about work opportunities here. It's the same in Ocean City MD and in Key West Florida. Sometimes there is a language barrier but at least everyone I've had dealings with have been very nice and helpful.

it has been that way for years, exchange students/workers come to the US and spend the summer in the obx... we have hung out with some of the kids and they told us that they get to come to the us, visit different cities before they come to work, then visit some more of the US, then go home. it sounds like a cool thing to me. i wish when i was a 20 something, i could have went to europe or asia and got to spend a summer overseas. they always say that it is hard to fill all the jobs with locals especially during prime season..

the kid at the froggy dog did a good job as our server...

also some years it seems as though they just had kids from richmond spending the summer and working in Avon...

here in ohio, Cedar Point amusement park actually goes to colleges and international universities to invite them to come to sandusky, work the summer and make a little money, they even have their hometown on their name badge. it is fun to see it say... Pedro/SAN PAULO BRAZIL
or just Jen/ los angeles , CA

We asked some of the kids in restaurants and they said they were exchange students and only spending summer there. They were getting ready to go back in Mid September. It made it interesting.

I am wondering if we should try to bring groceries or buy them in OBX. We will be there the week of June 15th. We are an extended family of 8- 4 adults, 1 teen and 2 babies.

You can buy groceries there, and it's not too bad, but if you have the space, bring stuff. Your Walmart at home will certainly beat the prices on the banks. We have an electric cooler that plugs into our car. This saves the cost and mess of ice. We keep it in the car and take picnic meals everywhere. The kids get to pick what to have for different meals.
