Subject: 4x4 beach traffic
A group of us are planning our first visit to OBX this year and are staying at one of the 4x4 beaches about 3 mi. north of the paved road.

Recently, someone told me that they wouldn't advise staying here because of all the people 4-wheeling driving up and down the beach at all hours of the day/night.

With kids, they also told me that you have to watch for 4x4s while the kids are playing on the beach.

While I doubt it's as bad as they said, what's it really like there?

Thank you!

I should also note that we're staying at one of the beaches north of Corrolla.

Subject: cars on the 4x4 beach area...
First time to 4x4 area in september. Im a little confused........ If you are to drive right on the beach, wouldnt the vehicles be in the way of the peoples activites ( i.e. sunbathing, playing, etc.)? How close are the cars and how often do they pass by?

Yes, you have to drive on the beach for everything, the beach is the main "road" in the 4X4 area. When at the beach, you should park in the middle portion of the beach, between the high water mark and the duneline. Please stay off the dunes!

As in some other messages, we were at Carova Beach earlier this month. We were on the beach almost all day every day. There is some traffic but we hardly even noticed. But one caution is always to look before you walk. You can hardly hear the vehicles. Most vehicles try to stay some distance from people on the beach, but people on the beach also need to stay out of the main path. Again, we LOVED it!

guess i didnt specify that we are vacationing in the 4x4 area north of Corolla. I understand that drivingon the beach is the ONLY way to get around, so wouldnt you have to drive all year on the beach?

Driving on the beaches in Sept is only allowed on the beaches south of Oregon Inlet. They pass pretty close to where other cars are parked because the beach is fairly wide there. After Oct 1 they allow people to drive in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head and they pass close to you! VERY CLOSE and they don't allow dogs in the summer - go figure. Give me the dogs and prohibit the ya-hoos in trucks year round!!!

My observation is that it is a road first, beach second. You have to be comfortable with vehicles passing by you very closely when you are sitting on the beach. If you're not, you might consider staying in Corolla or Duck.

As with having kids near cars or trucks, its always important to keep an eye on them. The traffic isn't as bad as people say. The beach road at the ocean is very wide. The Currituck police travel up and down daily and most everyone obeys the beach speed limit. If you park your truck near the ocean, you can have a blanket to a large canopy set up all day. If you just go down there with a beach towel, you'll be laying down in the road and the police will tell you to move. It's a unique and special area and well worth the stay. We've been renting up in South Swan (3 miles up)for years and love it there. The houses up there are truely awesome. We've had nothing but great things to say about the area and definately recommend it to friends and family.

I suggest that you rent a house with a pool, that way the kids are occupied and confined to a fenced area...easier to keep an eye on. Then go for shell-searching walks on the beach in the early morning and evening. Best value: get oceanfront views at semi-oceanfront prices in Swan Beach.

My family has been vacationing in the 4x4 area for the past three years, with children. We have never had any problems with "traffic." Yes,you do need to supervise your children just like at any other beach environment.
